Small Wars
Small Wars | Sadie Jones
9 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Sadie Jones, the award-winning and internationally bestselling author of The Outcast, returns with an ambitious, richly imagined novel that confirms her place in the literary firmament. A passionate and beautifully written tale of personal loss in the midst of war in late 1950s Cyprus, Small Wars raises important questions that are just as relevant today. What happens when everything a man believes in the army, his country, his marriage begins to crumble? Hal Treherne is a young British soldier on the brink of a brilliant career. Transferred to Cyprus to defend the colony, Hal takes his wife, Clara, and their daughters with him. But Hal is pulled into atrocities that take him further from Clara, a betrayal that is only one part of a shocking personal crisis to come. Small Wars is a searing, unforgettable novel from a writer at the height of her powers. From the Hardcover edition.

Pickpick

Struggling to write this review because both main characters, soldier husband and stay-at-home mom, aren‘t endearing but the story felt real. This book told their story in the backdrop of the #Cyprus uprising for independence (I know it‘s a bit more complicated than that) from the UK, but it was violent and scary. Wife was immature, at first; husband, likeable until he‘s not. This one will run you through the wringer. Of note, UK‘s occupation ⬇️

Texreader followed the end of the Ottoman Empire‘s own occupation of Cyprus—the Ottomans being quite the recurring theme for me this year! #crushtherush #readyourway #wintergames #merryreaders #wintersolstice #dashingdecember @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheSpineView @Clwojick @bookgoil @andrew65

Can anyone tell me what a “zebra crossing” is? You know I‘m picturing a 🦓 crossing the road. ???

Missusb It‘s the black and white striped lines across British (and Australian) roads which indicate a pedestrian crossing. Pic here: https://www.thearticle.com/the-forgotten-rules-of-the-zebra-crossing 4y

Just read this paragraph in the tagged book, and it really describes the politics of this book in 1950s #Cyprus. #crushtherush #readyourway #wintergames #merryreaders @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheSpineView @Clwojick

Pickpick

Hal & Clara, meet & marry when they are young & Hal is studying at the military academy. Training to be an officer is a much different experience than being an officer. Hal & his family are transferred to Cyprus where he is tasked with rooting out the rebel Cypriot who are fighting for their freedom. Evocative descriptions of the Mediterranean, from weather & terrain to the colors & culture.👇🏽

Cinfhen There was a lot of military action and descriptions but it was integral to the plot. Small Wars is insightful and thought provoking. A story about wars we fight at home, within ourselves and between the greater world around us.
