For the entire time we are in the office of marriage counselor, Sandy, and newly separated couple, Gretchen, and Steve. He cheated and now she thinks she‘s in love with someone else. Can their marriage be saved? This digs deep. I felt like I was in therapy and of course I cried, lol. Sandy has some cool devices she employs and though I started out hating everyone in here, I ultimately came to root for them. A drug me through the mud hard, pick!

Reggie @TrishB actually the therapist in this book has an empty green chair in her office to remind her that she represents the marriage in her sessions. And that the marriage is sitting there in the big green chair trying to tell the couples things sometimes. If only they listen. It was pretty cool. 4y

Centique Wow - the idea of the marriage sitting there as an additional person in the room. That‘s brilliant. I don‘t know if I can do this book right now as I have a friend who downloads to me about her dysfunctional marriage (has done for years) and I may have reached my capacity! 4y

Picked this on the recommendation of a bookstore‘s Insta story. It features Steve and Gretchen, a couple in their mid-30s who visit the marriage counselor, Sandy. The entire story is set in Sandy‘s office and focuses on the different sessions. It is almost entirely conversations and a bit slow. Some of the advice was good but overall an average read.

This is my book review for the book my #tbrjar picked. This is my first ever #tbrjarpick. I put this ARC in the recycling bin after I finished it. This is a book I own that I‘ve just read and I‘m counting it for #theunreadshelfproject2019. I‘m glad I read it and got it off of my shelf. I won‘t read this book again.

This book was painful. I‘m not talking just about the marriage either. This book was like a punishment. I had to stop. It was riddled with cliches. This book will only turn people away from marital counseling. I was alarmed the woman, innocent of wrongdoing, had to be psychologically gutted in the process. Why are we okay with this?

This was a pick for me but I recognize it‘s not for everyone. I wouldn‘t have been able to read this book five or ten years ago. But - if you‘ve got some marital years under your belt and are willing to be open to the ideas that are put forth here - it‘s an insightful look into a marriage that has imploded - and how two really broken and hurt people, resolve to work to put it back together, learn from their mistakes and move forward.

LauraBeth @Barbarabb, @valeriegeary My marriage blew up years ago and we waited until after we were actually divorced to see if we could reconcile and fix it. 😂 Turns out we could and we did. But I was nervous to read this. I liked hearing the silent opinions from the counselor bc it gave me insight into what our counselor had thought about us. And I like that the book gave the marriage itself a voice. It‘s another character entirely. 5y

LauraBeth @BarbaraBB ❤️❤️ the good news is that the book spends some time discussing why it‘s never based on nothing: “As a matter of fact, this is a marriage that, in material terms, has been very successful. Steve made money, you got tenure, you have two, smart, terrific children. You put something together here, and it took effort. Work. You built a marriage. The invisible thing you built. It‘s something.” 5y

Coffeedaily Marriage takes work. This episodic hashing out between partners in the confines of the marriage counselor‘s office seems realistic yet painful when the marriage is broken. It can be a cautionary tale or an instruction manual. Many times I just wanted to yell at these characters!! Worth the time to read. 5y
