A haunting, evocative tale about the power of storytelling A brutal civil war has ravaged the country, and contagious fevers have decimated the population. Abandoned farmhouses litter the isolated mountain valleys and shady hollows. The economy has been reduced to barter and trade. In this craggy, unwelcoming world, the central character of Scribe ekes out a lonely living on the family farmstead where she was raised and where her sister met an untimely end. She lets a migrant group known as the Uninvited set up temporary camps on her land, and maintains an uneasy peace with her cagey neighbors and the local enforcer. She has learned how to make paper and ink, and she has become known for her letter-writing skills, which she exchanges for tobacco, firewood, and other scarce resources. An unusual request for a letter from a man with hidden motivations unleashes the ghosts of her troubled past and sets off a series of increasingly calamitous events that culminate in a harrowing journey to a crossroads. Drawing on traditional folktales and the history and culture of Appalachia, Alyson Hagy has crafted a gripping, swiftly plotted novel that touches on pressing issues of our timemigration, pandemic disease, the rise of authoritarianismand makes a compelling case for the power of stories to both show us the world and transform it.

I wanted to love this book, but I just didn't. It was a bit of a mess and felt very long for such a slim novel. The idea behind the story is amazing, but to me there were so much extra added that wasn't necessary. Also... it was kind of depressing, which is not what I need in 2020.

Sace I didn't read the entire sinopsis but it sounds a little too real. I wouldn't have been able to get through it. 3y

An interesting little story I found at the library recently. A mix of dystopian themes and magical realism, sprinkled with tales that have been passed down from generations before. A solid 3 1/2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️‘s.

tpixie I love the cover! 5y
daena @tpixie that‘s part of the reason I randomly picked it up off the shelf! 5y

Bailedbailed

Bailing due to bewilderment. Not everything in a book should be a mystery; a reader needs a place to set her feet.

Girl tries to eke out a living and protect herself in Appalachia after a war in this dystopian novel. Sounds like my 2001-2008 memoirs. Mixed reviews per “it‘s twisted.” Count me all in. #appalachia #dystopia #survival

This story is...different. I don‘t even remember where I saw it the first time and thought I‘d want it. I got it in a Christmas book exchange. It‘s interesting and I‘m over half finished but the writing style is different from any I‘ve read that I can remember. Mr. Meow does not care one way or the other. #catsoflitsy

A good story about loyalties and liars and tensions rising in a world plagued by sickness and scarcity, but the characters and writing didn‘t pull me totally in.

Belletrist October Pick #1
This book is one I might have to reread again. I still got the premise and the plot of the story but for some reason I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Gonna try to reread it in the future and see if I have a different opinion.

A civil war followed by a fever pandemic has left a decimated and impoverished population. This post apocalyptic novel is narrated by the unnamed main character known as the Scribe. She survived by learning to make papers and her letter writing skills, but theses are no simple letter she writes, her letters "can write out a man's pain and ease it from his heart forever", though she is no kindhearted soul she is wonderful complex and complicated.

batsy I just stacked this today :) Great review; sounds interesting! 5y

In another moment of book weakness, I subscribed to the Graywolf Press galley club and this was my first package! I like supporting indie presses with subscriptions... Plus I get to read books I may never heard of. Not a paid advertisement because I paid for this!

LectricSheep Oh wow! I had no idea they had a subscription service for galleys. 😬oh look, there‘s my money 💸💸💸 watch it go 6y

In a future Appalachia ruined by civil war and contagion, a woman ekes out her living by writing letters for the migrants who pass by her homestead. This haunting fable about the redeeming power of story, of owning one‘s story, and of taking the time to tell another‘s story with bald-faced honesty and empathy will get under your skin. This is not a pleasant tale, but an important one in the time of “fake news” and “would” and “wouldn‘t.”

kyraleseberg This sounds fantastic! 6y
underground_bks @kyraleseberg It‘s really good but really dark, so I️ would recommend making sure a reader is in the right mood for it! 6y
