Rings of Saturn
Rings of Saturn | W G Sebald
The Rings of Saturn--with its curious archive of photographs--records a walking tour of the eastern coast of England. A few of the things which cross the path and mind of its narrator (who both is and is not Sebald) are lonely eccentrics, Sir Thomas Browne's skull, a matchstick model of the Temple of Jerusalem, recession-hit seaside towns, wooded hills, Joseph Conrad, Rembrandt's "Anatomy Lesson," the natural history of the herring, the massive bombings of WWII, the dowager Empress Tzu Hsi, and the silk industry in Norwich. W.G. Sebald's The Emigrants (New Directions, 1996) was hailed by Susan Sontag as an "astonishing masterpiece perfect while being unlike any book one has ever read." It was "one of the great books of the last few years," noted Michael Ondaatje, who now acclaims The Rings of Saturn "an even more inventive work than its predecessor, The Emigrants."

Pup-date:

Saturn was incredibly sweet and she is going to make some family VERY happy (and soon, I‘m sure!). But I don‘t think it‘s going to be us. Officially, we are sleeping on it. My husband would have taken her home immediately. This is hard!

Leftcoastzen It is ! But it definitely needs to be the right fit ! What a cutie! 3mo
Prairiegirl_reading Yeah your heart has to be ready too. 🤗 3mo
ShelleyBooksie Saturn is gorgeous!!! Agree with prev posters - you need to be ready ♡ 3mo
AnnCrystal 😍🐶 Just Gorgeous 💝.

True, you need to be ready, otherwise it wouldn't be fair for the pup 🥲🐾💝.

We have a meet & greet appointment with an adoptable dog tomorrow. Her name is Saturn and she‘s adorable. She‘s described as “a two-year-old wiggle butt with a calm, graceful presence who radiates warmth” and “the queen of laid-back vibes.” She‘s great on a leash, sits on command, loves belly rubs, and is happiest when she‘s near you.

I‘m so nervous! This would be such a big change from the past decade spent with Moxie. ❤️‍🩹🐇

Wish us luck!

First read of 2024 completed. Not for the lighthearted. “Memories lie slumbering within us for months and years, quietly proliferating, until they are woken by some trifle and in some strange way blind us to life.”

Nothing to do with the planet or #Saturn5, but this tale of a walk around East Anglia came to mind for today‘s #RedRoseSeptember prompt.

@arlenefinnigan @Cinfhen

Cinfhen I bet this is a #1001Book @BarbaraBB ??!?! Um, I think I liked about 5 so far🤪 (edited) 5y

Pickpick

Difficult to describe, easy to read: this book is simply MARVELOUS ‼️ The book seems like a straightforward account of the narrator‘s walking tour of East Anglia in 1992. But prepare to be transported into the past, into dreams, into the very mysteries of life. Sebald‘s prose is pure magic! This is now one of my favorite books ever 😍🤩

#junebookbugs day 28 - #aplanetinthetitle

Resolve to #catchup on my June themes today, in whatever order I can.

Quite enjoyed this dream-like collection of travel logs and essays, which strive more to impose a mood on the reader than inform.
