Someone on Twitter brought attention to a sign in an Edmonton park that is probably from the 80s. #80sparty #fannypacks
@Cinfhen @batsy @readordierachel

Cinfhen Hahahaha😂nice find! Thanks for sharing❤️ 7y
julesG 😂😂😂 7y
TrishB We had a long discussion about these yesterday!! Not something you say in the U.K. without everyone falling into fits of giggles 😂😂 7y

ReadingEnvy And like all things, fanny packs are back again. 7y
Balibee146 @TrishB agreed... In Glasgow 'Ya Fanny' is a particularly crushing insult..... 7y
Lindy @Balibee146 I was 19 when I met a young man visiting from Scotland. He commented on the ‘dyke‘ pin I was wearing, saying he‘d never met a dyke before and asked to shake my hand. I got the impression the word meant something different to him and, sure enough, he thought I was a prostitute. 😂 7y
LeahBergen 😆😆 7y
readordierachel Wow, so specific! No other bag will do 😆 7y

I'm so happy to party with professional party people! You guys have covered all the bases with party snacks, games, cocktails, mix tapes, & hair spray. So after our riotous #80sparty sleepover, I've got some fun activities for our hangover day... A guaranteed boost-your-mood Jane Fonda workout 😂 after which we can sit in a circle & slap bracelets on each other. These things ended up being banned from schools. The 80s = wild! #HELLoWeen @Cinfhen

mabell Slap bracelets!!! 7y
saresmoore All the best stuff gets banned from school! 7y
LeahBergen I miss my fanny pack. 😂😂 7y

julesG @LeahBergen I'll need to teach my son what the word 'fanny' means, because he desperately wants a fanny pack - it's called 'belt bag' in German. 7y
Kalalalatja I remember those bracelets! 7y
LeahBergen @julesG You have to be careful with that word. In the US, a fanny is your bum. In the UK, it‘s your vagina. 😂😂😂😂 We also called them bum bags. 7y
julesG Fortunately, I knew that fanny has different meanings in US and UK. I'll probably scare him most with the UK meaning. BTW, in Austria, "Fanny" is a girl's first name; I told my friend from Vienna not to name her daughter thus, they travel abroad too often. 7y
TrishB @LeahBergen no way would you say fanny pack here! Bad enough when someone is named Fanny!! 7y
LeahBergen @julesG Yes, get him using the term “fanny pack” and THEN tell him the UK meaning. 🤣 Did your friend avoid the name after you warned her? 7y
LeahBergen @TrishB I only recently heard that they changed the characters names in Enid Blyton‘s The Magic Faraway Tree. Dick and Fanny are now Rick and Frannie. 🤣😂🤣 7y
julesG Can't wait to see my son's face. My friend called her daughter Marlene. Much better! 'Dick and Fanny'? Really? 😂😂😂 7y
CarolynM @LeahBergen @julesG I think it's outrageous to mess with the classics like that😂 Shows you how much language has changed in 50 years, those names were unremarkable when I was a child. 7y
Mdargusch Slap bracelets! ❤️❤️❤️ 7y
LazyDays Slap bracelets!!😄😍😄😍 7y
Billypar @julesG 'Belt bag' is such a practical, non-embarrassing name for it! @LeahBergen @TrishB Definitely didn't know that about the U.K. meaning. I've only ever met one person named Fanny...my grandma 😂 7y
erzascarletbookgasm Truly, I didn‘t know ‘fanny‘ means so differently in the US and UK! To me, it‘s just a name I came across often in books long ago. Come to think of it, no one is ever called Dick or Fanny now, or is there?! 😂 7y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Bahaha! So many unsafe names! 7y
Cinfhen Jane Fonda was the BOSS!! And Richard Simmons!!!!! Those bracelets made a comeback because my kids had them @Kalalalatja I don‘t remember them in the 80s 🤨we wore those black rubber band bracelets like Madonna!!! We called them goomies 7y
Reggie Ohhh, The fanny pack. 7y
TrishB @LeahBergen I only knew that because I brought one for my niece and started reading it to her (my brother and SIL don‘t read or buy books so it‘s one of my missions!) and was like wtf!! But kids would just snigger today I suppose. 7y
TrishB @Billypar 😁 I love learning about all these differences!! 7y
readordierachel I feel like fanny packs have made a soft comeback. I saw a teenager (a "cool" one) wearing one the other day! We've come full circle ? 7y
