Boobs
Boobs: Women Explore What It Means to Have Breasts | Ruth Daniell
At turns heartbreaking and hilarious, BOOBS is a diverse collection of stories about the burdens, expectations and pleasures of having breasts. From the agony of puberty and angst of adolescence to the anxiety of aging, these stories and poems go beyond the usual images of breasts found in fashion magazines and movie posters, instead offering dynamic and honest portraits of desire, acceptance and the desire for acceptance.Surrounded by flat-chested co-workers in a male-dominated construction crew, a woman finds pleasure in admiring her body with the occasional glimpse in a window. A new mother in a new city overcomes a sense of isolation through her experience of breastfeeding her son. Breastfeeding plays a role in another's story when, after identifying as gender non-binary and relaxing into an ambivalent relationship to her breasts, she becomes a parent. In another story, a young woman makes the decision to undergo breast-reduction surgery and appreciates a new sense of ownership and love of her body. A survivor of sexual assault shares her story of shame and healing and how she simultaneously began to recognize she has more to offer the world than her body and began to really, truly love her big breasts. One writer declares that we should "stand up for breasts ... playful and shameless as puppies."With startling and moving work from critically acclaimed writers including Lorna Crozier, Nancy Lee and Kate Braid, as well as new voices, these stories are passionate, determined, defiant and funny, and - perhaps most importantly - they look honestly and unflinchingly at both sadness and joy.

A brief non-book moment - I got my mammogram done yesterday. I‘m 36, and this is my second year of mammograms. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 44, and it‘s sobering for me to be approaching that age. So, in the interests of PSA,

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR MAMMOGRAM YET?

BarbaraTheBibliophage My yearly mammogram is next week. 6y

For my first read of #mountTBRreadathon, I finished this anthology of essays & poetry from indie pub Caitlin Press. It was good! At first, it seemed like the balance of the stories were about breast cancer, but me and my A cups got a healthy dose of variety after a bit, from stories about size huge and tiny to objectification (trigger warning) to trans journeys and more. I prefer this type of anthology to the Chicken Soup franchise, but I'm dark.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Sounds like a great read. 7y
Jencarter I‘ve been trying to read more essays and short stories. This sounds like it‘s right up my alley. 👍🏻 7y

"My mom took me to The Bay to buy a softly padded bra, and a boy I'd kissed at a party told the whole school that I wore falsies. Nothing crueller than puberty until old age!" #mountTBRreadathon

"It was 1960 and I was eleven years old, impatiently awaiting discharge from Vancouver General Hospital. Open heart surgery was new to Vancouver and my operation was a bit of an experiment: my surgeon perfected his technique on a poodle before fixing me." #mountTBRreadathon

This essay from this book made me chuckle:

"You make it your private goal to ruin boobs for people who like them. Like telling people what's really in [their] food, you are a boob truther. 'I bet between her boobs smells a bit like cheese.' You are a rotten potato."

Adding this one to my #TBR list, because my literary agent mentioned it. From the blurb, it looks like The Vagina Monologues, but about breasts, and the essays are written by numerous contributors.

LauraBrook It does sound interesting! I read a book by a breast plastic surgeon last year and it was interesting too, but I'd rather hear about breasts from women, you know? #stacked 7y
