#MayReads : I didn't read very many books this month because I read "The Way the Crow Flies" which took me quite a long time to finish. It's a complex, unusual read, but a bit boring at times.
My favorite reads this month were "The Tenth Circle" (of course!), "Little Fires Everywhere" and "Mr Mercedes".

My favorite read: Verity, for sure. Although The Outsider was awesome as well.

I was considering canceling my dinner plans so I could stay home and finish this book - that's how good and compelling it is. (I didn't cancel my plans, but I did stay up unreasonably late afterwards just to finish it.)

Colleen, I love you, and you can make me believe in a lot of things. But not in pizza-hating monsters.

It seems like this is one of Picoult's least popular novels, but I loved it! It's not my favorite of hers, but I loved it. I thought the description of domestic abuse awesome, and I also loved how she described Alex as a fundamentally good person who has a sickness, as opposed to some other characters in books who seem to do nothing else besides abusing their wife. It makes it more realistic that Cassie has such a hard time leaving him.

So I am an absolute fan of the early works of Stephen King, like the 70s, 80s and early 90s. But I think he just went downhill from there. This book is a huge exception. It is so good, well-written, complex and scary, it reminded me of the time when he actually was the King of horror (no pun intended). If you like horror, you should give it a go!

This book is addictive. It's a good page-turner. As for writing... You know that Tumblr post that's been going around about women in men's writing where some woman "breasted boobily" down the stairs? That's it. This book is the real-life version of this Tumblr post. It's full of women breasting boobily all over the place.

What is great is that without meaning to, I only read books by women this month.
My absolute favorite was Small Great Things : best Jodi Picoult book I've read so far.

I think Jodi Picoult is pretty much God who came down from heaven to write books, but this has to be my favorite so far. It changed my point of view on racism. I'm white and of course I never thought of myself as racist. But this book made me realize how prejudiced I really am, despite everything, despite how open-minded I claim to be. It made me uncomfortable, but in a good way.

It took me a while to get into this book, but I ended up really liking it. My favorite character was that of Rosie, the elephant. I actually teared up when August was being cruel to her.

Is it bad that I'm 28 and sometimes this happens to me already? 🤷‍♀️

Ok so I really didn't like this book. First of all, I don't like epistolary novels, and I didn't realize that 80% of this book would be epistolary. Second of all, nothing all that exciting happened. There's no suspense. I just didn't care. I couldn't bring myself to care about where Bernadette went or whether she was found. Nope.

So I feel this book is not getting the love it deserves. I know I love Jodi and she can do no wrong in my opinion but I was surprised at how much this book was disliked compared to her other books. I loved the topic, I loved the obvious pro-choice take but also the point of view of pro-life people, which showed them as complex human beings with emotions and not just religious nuts. And I loved the backwards storytelling!

My #SwissArmy book is "Flowers for Algernon". It's easy to read no matter how old you are, it's short so even someone who's not a reader can get through it and it has an amazing and beautiful message. One of my all time favorite books! #24in48

So, it's midnight here, and nope, I didn't make it to 24 hours, as predicted. I was close to 16 though which I don't think is that bad! How did you do? #24in48
But I did get to start a new Jodi Picoult book and I loooooove Jodi Picoult.

So I finished my second full book (third overall) for this #24in48 readathon: "Without Merit" by Colleen Hoover. It didn't disappoint. It had all the attributes of a good Colleen Hoover novel: a love story, crazy twists, and the compelling writing style that makes you want to keep going.

Sooooo I'm back from brunch, I've showered, it's 6PM here and I'm 13 hours into the #24in48 challenge. If you're any good at math, you know I won't make it. 😂
But I don't care: I'll do my best. And at least I think I'll manage to finish this book. It's Colleen Hoover, so it's a quick read.

#WeNeedDiverseBooks: Adam Silvera is my favorite LGBTQ+ author. His books are so powerful and make me cry all the time. Yes it's YA and some people hold that genre in contempt, but his stories are compelling and well-written. I have read all 3 of his books, "History is all you left me" the most recently. "They Both Die at the end" is my favorite though. #24in48

So it's 2AM here in Paris and I'm calling it a night for the #24in48 readathon. Not sure I'll make it to 24 hours of reading (I'm a little over 11 now) but I will try!

So I'm on my way to a birthday party (it's friends from the book club and I'm giving books as presents, so it should almost count as reading 📚😂).
I have a 45 minute commute and since my purse is too small to fit my Kindle I'll keep listening to my audiobook: NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (but the audiobook is called NOS4R2 for some reason 🤷‍♀️).
It has some Easter eggs from Stephen King universe (like the True Knot from Doctor Sleep ❤️).

#24in48 Random thought: Did Colleen Hoover go to the Harry Potter school of naming people? I could deal with Ridge, Auburn and Sky from her other books. But Merit, Honor and Utah? And - my personal favorite - Luck? 🍀
I mean, I still love Colleen Hoover though. How could I not?

So 5 and a half hours into the #24in48 readathon, I finished "The Woman in the Window". It was a great page-turner full of twists, most of which I didn't expect. (I'm not that good at guessing twists though.) So I definitely recommend this book if you're into psychological thrillers at all.

I had my doubts at first because this book started kind of slow but now I'm about a quarter of the way in and I'm sucked. 📚 I think I'm about to reach a turning point as the foreshadowing gets more frequent. 😁

So 2 hours into the #24in48 readathon, my almost-29-year-old body has decided to call it a night. ? I spent the last 10 minutes on "The woman in the window" because I feel like I need some good page-turners to keep me going this weekend. ?

So I managed to finish this book less than 2 hours into the #24in48 readathon.
I have yet to find an Adam Silvera book that hasn't made me cry. I have read all three, and although "They Both Die at the End" made me cry the hardest, this one is a close second.

So this year I have discovered Colleen Hoover's addictive style. I don't thing she's necessarily the best writer out there, but she does know how to write love, how to keep you wanting more and how to do unexpected twists. And that's enough to have a good time in my book (no pun intended).

I rarely read memoirs, but I love Michelle Obama and I couldn't wait for her book. This book is so representative of her and her image: intelligent, graceful, witty, driven, independent. A great read for women, but not only. I also learned a lot about what life in the White House is like!

I have read all 3 books and I loved all 3. The first one absolutely broke my heart and I ugly-cried. It is great as a stand alone novel, and at first I actually wondered why the author wrote 2 more. But after finishing the third book I understood that all three novels were necessary for the main character's growth.

This is one of the lesser-known Jodi Picoult novels, however I enjoyed it immensely. I loved Jacob's character, and being immersed into the mind of someone with Asperger. I did read some reviews saying Picoult's description of Asperger was not accurate - I don't really know anyone who has the syndrome, so I can't say one way or the other. But the book was a beautiful, compelling read.

I expected to love this book. I loved the premice of the book and I loved the first part, about Gilda and Hosanna and how they tried to make their little business work in a world where neither of them seemed to fit. But I didn't like the present-day part. I felt like there was a lot of it about characters I didn't care about.

#SeptemberReads: I actually read 6 books this month, but "Un arc-en-ciel dans la nuit" by Dominique Lapierre is not on the collage because it was a library book and I forgot to take a picture. Anyway I hated it.
All these are written by women, except for "More Happy Than Not".
I would call the Adam Silvera and Jodi Picoult ones 5-star reads.

This book chilled me to the bone. I was angry with almost all the men and some of the women in the book. It is part of some feminist literature that I think all women should read - The Handmaid's Tale, Only Ever Yours, The Stepford Wives, and now Vox.

This is both funny and heartbreaking.

I officially love Adam Silvera. This book did not make me ugly-cry like They both die at the end, but it emotionally destroyed me in a different way. It made me so angry. Read it.

My absolute 5-star favorites are Almost Love, The Surface Breaks and My Sister's Keeper (probably my number 1 this month. Louise O'Neill and Jodi Picoult rock.)

The review will be about the entire series which I've read this past week. (I'm too lazy to write 3 reviews) These books are so cute. They're light, funny, and very wholesome. I loved the first two, the third one is a bit inferior in my opinion since not very much happens but the entire series is a very enjoyable, fun read.

I adored this book with all my heart. It was, without a doubt, the best book I read this summer. The story is so compelling, it deals with complex moral issues. I loved all the characters who are relatable in their own way. My boyfriend found me sobbing on the couch after finishing this book, that's how heartbreaking it is.

It was okay - but it reminded me why I always feel squeamish about reading King's recent work (even though I'm a fan of the author). The premisce is great but the storyline ended up all over the place in the middle of the book. I listened to it on Audible and sometimes my mind wandered. But it was not a bad read overall.

Like anything Louise O'Neill does, this book is amazing. It gives you an entirely different perspective of the original Little Mermaid's tale, while all the same changing very few things. I loved the character of Ceto, the Sea Witch. She was fierce and inspiring.

This book is full of wonderful quotes. Louise O'Neill rules.
