The Law of Similars
The Law of Similars: A Novel | Chris Bohjalian
13 posts | 13 read | 21 to read
" The Law of Similars is fast-paced and absorbing. Few writers can manipulate a plot with Bohjalian's grace and power."-The New York Times Book Review From the number one bestselling author of Midwives comes this riveting medical thriller about a lawyer, a homeopath, and a tragic death. When one of homeopath Carissa Lake's patients falls into an allergy-induced coma, possibly due to her prescribed remedy, Leland Fowler's office starts investigating the case. But Leland is also one of Carissa's patients, and he is begining to realize that he has fallen in love with her. As love and legal obligations collide, Leland comes face-to-face with an ethical dilemma of enormous proportions. Graceful, intelligent, and suspenseful, The Law of Similars is a powerful examination of the links between hope and hubris, love and deception. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Chris Bohjalian's The Light in the Ruins.

It was 25 years ago this novel was published. Happy Silver Anniversary to THE LAW OF SIMILARS. The last lines? “And though some days it is very hard, I try not to live for the future. And I try not to dream of the past.” @DoubledayBooks

“And those some days it is very difficult, I try not to live for the future. And I try not to dream of the past.” — The very last line of this novel, published 20 years ago this month. Yup. Twenty years.

On this date in 1755, homeopathy founder Samuel Hahnemann was born. My novel, THE LAW OF SIMILARS, would not exist were it not for him. From the novel: “And though some days it is very hard, I try not to live for the future. And I try not to dream of the past.”

It was 19 years ago this month that THE LAW OF SIMILARS was published. Not a round number, but still bronze. My deepest thanks to the team at Vintage Books, and everyone at @penguinrandomhouse . "And though some days it is very hard, I try not to live for the future. And I try not to dream of the past."

"For almost two full years after my wife died, I slept with our daughter. Obviously, this wasn't Abby's idea (and I think, even if it were, as her father I'd insist now on taking responsibility). After all, she was only two when. . ." So begins THE LAW OF SIMILARS.

Homeopathy founder Samuel Hahnemann was born on this date. His diaries and journals figure prominently in this novel from 1999. The first sentence? "For almost two full years after my wife died, I slept with my daughter."

The.Intentional.Reader This was an amazing book. I still remember the magical element to much of it. This book carried me out of a slump in my life and helped me to love the simple act of reading again. 8y

One more #throwbackthursday photo from another old issue of People Magazine I found in my library: my amazing Grace Experience and me at DisneyWorld. Thanks, People Magazine. Memories! @doubledaybooks

Hooked_on_books I was sorry to see you delete your last post. Here was my comment: We all have to stay strong and not let lies drive the narrative or we enter a scary, dangerous path. Books can help remind us of what's important. 8y

From an old issue of Mademoiselle Magazine I found cleaning my library. Look at how young we all were once upon a time. Who can guess the year?

LittlePixels I remember reading (and loving!) Midwives in...1998? I think? Then I snapped up The Law of Similars right after it came out, maybe a couple years later. 2000? 2001? 8y
Well-ReadNeck This is great!!!! I'm guessing 2003 (ish)? (edited) 8y

When I was shopping for #cupidgoespostal, I managed to find a few books for myself! I buy anything I find by @ChrisBohjalian and Ian McEwan, because I always enjoy their work. And @Josie posted a bunch of great reviews for Tell the Wolves I'm Home, so I had to buy it. #bookstack #minihaul
