I appreciated the #ownvoices multi-POV way this book was written by survivors of the Parkland school shooting. I come from a strong military background and this quote from student Chris Grady really hit me, "I ended up unenlisting just after the March... It was obviously a big decision for me, but I keep saying to people, how can I go overseas and protect people when they're getting shot here in their classrooms and on the streets?" (Pages 87-88)

I flew through this unexpected library find. These experiences, straight from the mouths of so many young adults are powerful to read. I vacillated between heartbreak for what they have gone through and anger that it‘s been left up to them to fight this fight. Including how little our leaders have done & still don‘t do to protect the citizens of this country from the epidemic of gun violence, even with consensus on many common sense solutions.

This kid right here.... he is going to be running for office some day, and I can guarantee that he‘s be a better public servant than the majority currently serving as our representatives.

Hearing the kids tell their own stories from that day forward, and seeing all they‘d gone through, and then reading their speeches the day of the March, just over a month after the shooting, makes all their public remarks that much more powerful.

It‘s things like this that make me realize we really do have some “deplorables” in this country. I know she got a lot of flack for saying that... but a bunch of kids who survived a school shooting, and are dealing with it by speaking up about how they feel, and they are getting death threats! If that‘s not deplorable, I don‘t know what is. 😢

Amiable I agree. I think there are too many people out there who are lacking the gene for compassion and empathy. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Amiable Yes, exactly... after Sandy Hook, the kids were too little to speak out...so it was labeled a hoax by some. This time the kids were old enough to speak out and they were sent death threats. I don‘t know where we lost the empathy gene, but that‘s a very scary sign for our future. 6y

This book, from their point of view, makes it so real in a way that I have to hope will touch a lot of people.

MelissaSue81 I posted this same quote when I read this book. It made me so angry! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MelissaSue81 I know... this whole book has me boomeranging between crying and anger. They did a really good job just being honest with their feelings, which I think humanizes the whole situation in a way it isn‘t normally. 6y

Their first trip to the FL State House, just days after the shooting, talking to their local representatives.

I didn‘t like this quite as much as We Say #NeverAgain. The different voices seemed a little bit disjointed at times, but still a powerful message. The last chapter detailing their “platform” is extremely interesting and also spot on. Also not the best choice to read at work because I couldn‘t hold back the tears, especially reading the speeches from the March.

This is the third Parkland book I‘ve read in the last couple months. I‘m really digging the cover art. Hope the book is good.
