The Devil Aspect
The Devil Aspect: A Novel | Craig Russell
A terrifying novel set in Czechoslovakia in 1935, in which a brilliant young psychiatrist takes his new post at an asylum for the criminally insane that houses only six inmates--the country's most depraved murderers--while, in Prague, a detective struggles to understand a brutal serial killer who has spread fear through the city, and who may have ties to the asylum In 1935, Viktor Kosrek, a psychiatrist newly trained by Carl Jung, arrives at the infamous Hrad Orlu Asylum for the Criminally Insane. The state-of-the-art facility is located in a medieval mountaintop castle outside of Prague, though the site is infamous for concealing dark secrets going back many generations. The asylum houses the country's six most treacherous killers--known to the staff as The Woodcutter, The Clown, The Glass Collector, The Vegetarian, The Sciomancer, and The Demon--and Viktor hopes to use a new medical technique to prove that these patients share a common archetype of evil, a phenomenon known as The Devil Aspect. As he begins to learn the stunning secrets of these patients, five men and one woman, Viktor must face the disturbing possibility that these six may share another dark truth. Meanwhile, in Prague, fear grips the city as a phantom serial killer emerges in the dark alleys. Police investigator Lukas Smolak, desperate to locate the culprit (dubbed Leather Apron in the newspapers), realizes that the killer is imitating the most notorious serial killer from a century earlier--London's Jack the Ripper. Smolak turns to the doctors at Hrad Orlu for their expertise with the psychotic criminal mind, though he worries that Leather Apron might have some connection to the six inmates in the asylum. Steeped in the folklore of Eastern Europe, and set in the shadow of Nazi darkness erupting just beyond the Czech border, this stylishly written, tightly coiled, richly imagined novel is propulsively entertaining, and impossible to put down.

Giving this one a try. In a mood of not knowing what I want to read, besides "Harlem Shuffle" which I am enjoying. Like to have a "real" book and a Kindle book going at the same time as I read the Kindle when I go to bed.....easier to hold in prone position. ? Besides I love thrillers and this promises to be a thrill.

After the gentle sleuthing of my last bk this was a punch in the stomach, the dark porter in a local micro brewery we found matching the very bloody theme.
Set in 1935 czhechoslovakia a yng psychiatrist goes to his job in a gothic castle asylum housing 6 of the worst killers in the country. His exploration of their psyche triggers terrible tales +secrets as a brutal monster stalks the Prague streets. Definitely avoid if squeamish.

He begins his experimental treatments on these patients, but may find more than he bargained for. Meanwhile, a serial killer is on the loose in Prague. These stories will weave together a horror thriller with a shocking ending. Loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Prague, 1935. Viktor Kosárek, psychiatrist and Jung devotee, begins a new job analyzing The Devil's Six, the most notorious serial killers of the day all locked up in the Hrad Orlu Asylum for the Criminally Insane. As his hypnotic treatments continue he discovers a shared thread amongst the inmates, but he gets more than he bargained for. Viktor's treatments seem to have awoken a sleeping evil who just may be the Devil himself.

A psychological slow burn with a supernatural edge. I loved the pre-WWII backdrop and the overall atmosphere of Prague. The author did a really good job weaving the storylines of the psychiatrist and the police inspector together and I was not expecting the ending. It was a little slow but I had a hard time putting it down. This is what I wanted The Silent Patient to be! If you‘re looking for a Halloween read, try this.

Yet another busy week for my #BFC but hopefully I‘ll be less busy this upcoming week. I don‘t think I made my book goal but I did make a lot of headway with the tagged book. I‘ve fallen behind on my daily exercising but I did go to a concert this week and stood/danced/sweated my ass off for 4 1/2 hours so I‘m counting that as a workout 🤣 met my 3 meals a day goal and...I think that‘s it. I am adjusting my exercise goal since having a set 👇🏻

RainyDayReading Amount of minutes is just stressing me out. So instead I‘m just making it a goal to move more during the day. To stand more, walk more etc. I‘ll figure out a step count as I experiment more over these next few days. #fitwizards @Clwojick @wanderinglynn 5y
wanderinglynn Dancing & standing that long definitely counts! Way to go! 🙌🏻 And it‘s good to strive for more, but take time to celebrate what you did accomplish! 🎉 And more importantly, you didn‘t quit! One step, one day at a time. Just keep moving forward. 5y
Cheshirecat913 Concert are are the best, dancing counts! Good job with the meals! 5y

RainyDayReading @Clwojick It was so much fun!!! Until ya know, tall people stood directly in front of me 🤣 Thankfully the singer bounced around a lot so I could still see him. 5y

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I couldn't put this down! I liked the parallel storylines. The first follows a young psychiatrist, Viktor Kosárek, taking a position at Hrad Orlú Asylum for the Criminally Insane. We learn about the six inmates housed there, known as the Devil's Six, and are given each of their backstory's. The second storyline follows a police officer, Lukás Smolák, and his investigation into "Leather Apron," a Jack the Ripper copycat.
So good!!!!

AmyG Ooooo good to know. I will have to bunp this book up on my ebook tbr. 6y

Viktor is a psychiatrist in 1935 in the Czech Republic and he is starting a new job at an asylum for six prisoners that are very dangerous to society. He has new methods he wants to use on the prisoners. While he is inside the asylum working there is a dangerous killer of women called Leather Apron on the lose. Lukas is a police officer on the case looking for the killer.
This is a very intriguing novel. I really enjoyed this one!

Horror, mystery, historical, crime novel. The book encompasses all this. Right before the start of World War II, a serial killer is on the loose in Europe with ties to six psychos locked up in an insane asylum in Czechoslovakia. Each claims they are possessed by the devil. Are they? Think Silence if the Lambs meets The Exorcist in this suspenseful novel.

I‘ve been a big fan of the author‘s for the past seven years- and so I was really excited to read this (so much so that I got it twice- pre-ordered and approved on #NetGalley!). This standalone historical thriller set in #Czechoslovakia is absolutely great!! Fast-paced, intriguing characters and a twisty plot all combine to make this unputdownable! Can‘t wait to see what he writes next!!!

Mirandareads My favorite of 2019 so far!!! 6y

This was a creepy but very well executed psychological thriller that I read last month! Really interesting setting too - Czechoslovakia just before WW2. My full review is on my blog now!

I received an e-arc of this book through Netgalley. My review is my own honest opinion.
