American Nations
American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America | Colin Woodard
An illuminating history of North America's eleven rival cultural regions that explodes the red state-blue state myth. North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an American or Canadian culture, but rather into one of the eleven distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent, and the rivalries and alliances between its component nations, which conform to neither state nor international boundaries. He illustrates and explains why American values vary sharply from one region to another. Woodard (author of American Character: A History of the Epic Struggle Between Individual Liberty and the Common Good) reveals how intranational differences have played a pivotal role at every point in the continent's history, from the American Revolution and the Civil War to the tumultuous sixties and the "blue county/red county" maps of recent presidential elections. American Nations is a revolutionary and revelatory take on America's myriad identities and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and are molding our future. From the Hardcover edition.

I‘ve been switching back and forth from audiobook to PB, and I prefer the audio. Mostly because the narrator, at 1.25 speed, sounds very like Brent Spiner and I am hella enjoying imaging that it‘s Data, describing an ancient civilization on a distant planet. 😄

Texreader Love this!!!! 12mo

Book group read. Woodard makes a persuasive argument that America is not one but 11 nations, all with different values and characters. Really, really interesting, and explains why we continue to be so divided on so many things. Fascinating.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds interesting… stacking! 12mo

Also, I would love to know how my copy of this book made it‘s way from a public library on the “Left Coast” to a donation bin in “Yankeedom” (to use the terms the author coins) where I picked it up!

I was shopping & my eye caught on Yankee magazine & I felt really nostalgic & sad as the reality that the holidays will be very different this year. I love New England all year but especially this season.

This book really crystallizes a lot of cultural differences that you would not normally think of & it was so interesting to think of how that influences what kind of Yankee I am! #nonfictionNovember #proudnewenglander #falalalBLAH #fuckcovid

The Appalachian borderlanders believed in individuals over government. Supposedly they sharpened their nails and heated them over candles in order to fight better - to dig out people's eyes better!

My, how attitudes changed in Texas!

MarkoPDX I'm a disciple of this book. I think he's right on the money. 5y

This book comes up in conversation often, years after I read it. We aren't just North vs. South, Liberals vs. Conservatives. It's much more complex than that. Read this book.

My library hold for this came in. I think this is going to be my lunch read for the next couple of weeks because I think smaller chunks will help me understand and remember the arguments better.

Well-ReadNeck I loved this one. So enlightening 5y
Meglet Is it as helpfully informative as it sounds? I‘m intrigued! 5y
melissanorr It's quite interesting @Meglet but I think reading it in paper might be a better idea than kindle. I'm trying to read it on kindle but it's a lot harder to see the maps and to refer back to them when I need to. 5y
Meglet Ah, yes. That makes sense. Physical books are definitely still better in some situations. I remember writing a research paper where one of my references was in ebook form, and that was a struggle! 5y

Revealing book that gives insight into the culture clashes we see daily in the US.

1. In my bed!

2. Fic: The Last Time I Lied; Non-fic: American Nations (tagged); Audio: The Secret Garden.

3. I'm a mood reader. I go through books I already own (physical stacks and a Kindle collection) or see what I can find on Libby. Or a long-awaited hold comes in and I just try to shift my focus on that!

It's an enlightening read, for sure, and one that make any American rethink their place in the country; it's also very dry, and, since the election of 2016, miserably depressing.

This lil' NPR blurb definitely captures the post-election mourning and fiery #overit posts that I've seen recently. All of us here know the healing, wisdom, and sense of empowerment that books can provide, so I for one am diving straight into diverse, compassionate reading. Ideally that will express my current dismay and frustration AND allow me to engage with the world in a new way.

I wish everyone the best in their own reading adventures ❤️

Given the happenings in this election, I've become very interested in how blocks of voting developed historically, and the different cultural groups that comprise the United States. Have not started reading this one yet, but it looks like it explores exactly what I'm looking for.

#photoadaynov16 Should be fiction but I cheated a little. #imwithher

Very enlightening and interesting, and I feel like it explains a lot. I have found myself talking about this book for days since I have finished reading it. I recommend for everyone, whether you like history or not.
