Set against the backdrop of a 1970s commune in Northern California, Clover Blue is a compelling, beautifully written story of a young boy's search for identity. There are many things twelve-year-old Clover Blue isn't sure of: his exact date of birth, his name before he was adopted into the Saffron Freedom Community, or who his first parents were. What he does know with certainty is that among this close-knit, nature-loving group, he is happy. Here, everyone is family, regardless of their disparate backgrounds--surfer, midwife, Grateful Dead groupie, Vietnam deserter. But despite his loyalty to the commune and its guru-like founder Goji, Blue grapples with invisible ties toward another family--the one he doesn't remember. With the urging of his fearless and funny best friend, Harmony, Clover Blue begins to ask questions. For the first time, Goji's answers fail to satisfy. The passing months bring upheaval to their little clan and another member arrives, a beautiful runaway teen named Rain, sparking new tensions. As secrets slowly unfurl, Blue's beliefs--about Goji, the guidelines that govern their seemingly idyllic lives, and the nature of family itself--begin to shift. With each revelation about a heartbreaking past he never imagined, Blue faces a choice between those he's always trusted, and an uncertain future where he must risk everything in his quest for the truth. Part coming-of-age tale, part love story, part mystery, Clover Blue tenderly explores an unconventional but no less complex family that resonates with our deep-rooted yearning for home.

While I did find some places to be slow and repetitive, I ultimately really enjoyed the story of Clover Blue. Blue is a young boy living in a commune that is the only place he remembers. As he reaches the age when kids often start questioning the world, he becomes fixated on learning about his beginnings. Heartbreaking and at the same time, hopeful, this is a beautifully written book set in SoCA during the 70s. #family #tribe #love #identity

Actually.... baby snakes have less control of the amount of venom injected. Adult snakes have learned to not waste their valuable venom on bites that don't result in a meal, so adult venomous snakes deliver more dry bites.
Not to mention that the bitten character here is already showing symptoms of serious envenomation, so it seems silly to say that it could have been a dry bite. 😡

Rant over. Herpetologist wife problems. 🐍

DivineDiana I‘m impressed with your snake bite knowledge! 👏🏻🐍 👏🏻 5y
Megabooks As a vet, I totally get it!! 5y
cherinium @DivineDiana Well, I worked on the animal health staff at a zoo for a few years, which is where I met my husband. He is a herpetologist and has taught me more than I ever thought I needed to know. Even as an employee who sometimes worked on venomous snakes, I had to have some training on the subject. Snake bite drills are a thing in zoos! 5y

cherinium @Megabooks I tend to shy away from books about animals, because I just cringe when things are not right. 5y
Megabooks @cherinium Same here! I am actually reading a science book about venom right now, though. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
BeansPage Well said 😊👌 5y
cherinium @Megabooks If it's a science book, hopefully it contains good information. 5y
Megabooks @cherinium It does. The author has a PhD with a dissertation on venomous lionfish. 👍🏻👍🏻 5y
CouronneDhiver Gives me the shivers either way. Lol 5y
cherinium @CouronneDhiver I understand. I was terrified of snakes until I had to give them medical care and learned more about them. Now, I wouldn't say I love them, but I am no longer afraid, and I can appreciate their place in the world. Some of them are quite beautiful, too! 5y

Starting something new today. My lack of motivation to do anything will probably keep me firmly planted in this spot for a while. #lazyday #lazysunday #currentlyreading #onceuponabookclub @Onceuponabookclub

It took me a while to get into this book. But I did enjoy the story. The ending felt rushed to me. I probably wouldn‘t have picked this book, for that reason I am thankful for @Onceuponabookclub

I haven‘t done a lot of reading (or sharing) the past couple of weeks because a certain pup has taken up all of my free time. Today we‘re having a lazy Sunday though so I‘m catching up. Just finished my April #onceuponabookclubbox The Deepest Blue and I‘m about to start on the May book Clover Blue.

So special getting to meet author Eldonna Edwards at the Adventures by the Book event last night, whose book Clover Blue is absolutely amazing!
Clover Blue is a special kind of story, that type of story where you really connect with the characters and get sucked into their world, their thoughts and their feelings. I thought Eldonna Edwards ability to get into the mind of a 12 year old boy shows just what a great writer she really is!

Going to try this out! :) any reviews?

wanderinglynn I too would be interested to hear reviews. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Stephanie.Severing @wanderinglynn I gave a year of it to my mom last year and she enjoyed it. I thought the items were great, although book related/deco purposes and she enjoyed the books she read but sometimes they were not her particular style. Overall it was fun, but after a year she was ready to stop. 5y
Stephanie.Colson Thanks for the feedback @Chrissyreadit :) 5y

I‘ve been looking forward to reading more from Edwards since finishing her debut novel, This I Know, last year. I was thrilled to have my #NetGalley request approved! Spanning thirty years, this coming-of-age novel opens with a birth in the Northern California Saffron Freedom Community that incites the titular character to start asking questions about his own identity. Heartbreaking, completely wonderful and unputdownable! Can‘t wait for more!
