Miss Blaine's Prefect and the Golden Samovar
Miss Blaine's Prefect and the Golden Samovar | Olga Wojtas
6 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
Never underestimate a librarian. Comfortably padded and in her middle years, Shona McMonagle may look bookish and harmless, but her education at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls has left her with a deadly expertise in everything from martial arts to quantum physics. It has also left her with a bone-deep loathing for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, that scurrilous novel that spread scandalous untruths about the finest educational institution in Edinburgh. Her skills, her deceptively mild appearance, and her passionate loyalty make Shona the perfect recruit for a new and interesting project: Time-travel to Tzarist Russia, prevent a gross miscarriage of romance, and in any spare time see to it that only the right people get murdered. Its a big job, but no task is too daunting for a Head Girl from Miss Blaines.

I'm not sure I get this book, but there was an early reference to Morningside, which I miss wandering through, so...

Bailedbailed

I would have bet this quirky story about a time-traveling librarian would be right up my alley, but it‘s just silly. Maybe it‘s a couple of revisions away from comic perfection, but as it stands, it‘s just too farcical for my taste. I made it halfway through, but I just do not care about Shona‘s mission at all. Disappointed. Moving on.

AlaMich But that cover...❤️ 5y
Moodyreader This is stunning! 5y
BookNAround I was wildly disappointed in this one too. 5y

BookishMarginalia @LeahBergen Yes, it sounded fun but it was just silly, and not in a good way. I bailed halfway through. 5y
LeahBergen Well, that‘s too bad. 😐 5y

Matching tea to story. Smoky Russian Caravan with this time-traveling mystery of Imperial Russia. Shame I've no samovar though. #TeaAndTales

batsy Gorgeous photo! 6y
Moray_Reads @Soubhiville it's one of my favourites, a mixture of keemun, oolong and lapsang Souchong 😋 6y
Soubhiville Wow! Where do you get it? I love the name and the ingredients 😊 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Love your teapot! 6y
Moray_Reads @Soubhiville this one is from a tea shop just near my flat but most tea places do a Russian Caravan blend or something similar. Twinings do a nice one 6y
Soubhiville Cool, thank you! I‘ll try the twinings one, but I also may try to order some online 🤗 6y
LeahBergen This sounds like a fun read. How are you enjoying it? 6y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen I have to be honest, I found it very annoying. Not a fraction as funny as it thinks it is, repetitive and plot-wise a little weak... 6y
Centique What a beautiful photo! 6y
LeahBergen Aaaand... unstacked. 😆😆 6y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen I seem to be grumpy and easily irritated with my reading at the moment, I can tell if it's me or just my choices! This one seems to be wildly popular but even her mentions of Morningside in Edinburgh (not 5 minutes from where I live) couldn't win me over 6y
