The Last Town on Earth
The Last Town on Earth: A Novel | Thomas Mullen
12 posts | 17 read | 24 to read
Set against the backdrop of one of the most virulent epidemics that America ever experiencedthe 1918 flu epidemicThomas Mullens powerful, sweeping first novel is a tale of morality in a time of upheaval. Deep in the mist-shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest is a small mill town called Commonwealth, conceived as a haven for workers weary of exploitation. For Philip Worthy, the adopted son of the towns founder, it is a haven in another senseas the first place in his life hes had a loving family to call his own. And yet, the ideals that define this outpost are being threatened from all sides. A world war is raging, and with the fear of spies rampant, the loyalty of all Americans is coming under scrutiny. Meanwhile, another shadow has fallen across the region in the form of a deadly illness striking down vast swaths of surrounding communities. When Commonwealth votes to quarantine itself against contagion, guards are posted at the single road leading in and out of town, and Philip Worthy is among them. He will be unlucky enough to be on duty when a cold, hungry, tiredand apparently illsoldier presents himself at the towns doorstep begging for sanctuary. The encounter that ensues, and the shots that are fired, will have deafening reverberations throughout Commonwealth, escalating until every human valuelove, patriotism, community, family, friendshipnot to mention the towns very survival, is imperiled. Inspired by a little-known historical footnote regarding towns that quarantined themselves during the 1918 epidemic, The Last Town on Earth is a remarkably moving and accomplished debut. From the Hardcover edition.

This novel was written in 2006, but I think reading it in the before times would have been a whole different experience. We know so much more. That makes it relatable. People are flawed. People make assumptions. People don‘t believe facts when they contradict their beliefs. We fail to add the humanity of humans into our plans. Every time.

Buechersuechtling I have no idea what this book is all about because I didn‘t peek in the database entry. But now I want to read it just because I read your review. Well done, Jacqueline. 😃 3y

Honestly, I was so bored. 1/2 way through and it seemed like nothing happened. Had to put it down.

A great story mixed with facts on a time that not a lot of history is shared.
It showed me a United States that I didn't recognize and one I'll surely be studying more.

Reading about a an influenza epidemic (1918) while everyone in town seems to be getting either the flu or a stomach virus is maybe not the best timing for a good night‘s sleep. This is an interesting premise and after a slow start, the action really gets going in there.

tonyahoswalt Ooh, I listened this on audiobook about 9 years ago. The narrator did the coughing and all. After that, when I was working the desk at my library and heard someone cough, I'd panic a little and look all around for the culprit! 6y
Well-ReadNeck @tonyahoswalt OMG! The coughing!!! 😷 6y

RanaElizabeth @BethFishReads Not to create waves but I hated Station Eleven. Literary apocalypse books just bore me silly. 😎 8y

Had a fight with a family member tonight about whether or not they should get the flu vaccine so seemed appropriate to start a book set during the 1918 epidemic.

TheCanuckReader I got poked today with my flu vaccine! 8y
Zelma Read book. I read it for a book club years ago and it was an interesting discussion. 👍 8y
