Too Close to Home
Too Close to Home: A Thriller | Linwood Barclay
4 posts | 13 read | 10 to read
The night they killed our neighbors, we never heard a thing. In a quiet suburban neighborhood, in a house only one door away, a family is brutally murdered for no apparent reason. And you think to yourself: It could have been us. And you start to wonder: What if were next? Linwood Barclay, critically acclaimed author of No Time for Goodbye, brings terror closer than ever before in a thriller where murder strikes in the place we feel safest of all. Promise Falls isnt the kind of community where a family is shot to death in their own home. But that is exactly what happened to the Langleys one sweltering summer night, and no one in this small upstate New York town is more shocked than their next-door neighbors, Jim and Ellen Cutter. They visited for the occasional barbecue and their son, Derek, was friends with the Langleys boy, Adam; but how well did they really know their neighbors? Thats the question Jim Cutter is asking, and the answers hes getting arent reassuring. Albert Langley was a successful, well-respected criminal lawyer, but was he so good at getting criminals off that he was the victim of revengea debt his innocent family also paid in blood? From the towns criminally corrupt mayor to the tragic suicide of a talented student a decade before, Promise Falls has more than its share of secrets. And Jim Cutter, failed artist turned landscaper, need look no further than his own home and his wife Ellens past to know that things arent always what they seem. But not even Jim and Ellen are ready to know that their son was in the Langley house the night the family was murdered. Suddenly the Cutters must face the unthinkable: that a murderer isnt just stalking too close to home but is inside it already. For the Langleys werent the first to die and they wont be the last. Full of plot twists. The book is made up of at least 5 completely different situations which, as the story progresses, intertwine creating 2 main events, perfectly connected to each other.
Although I found it boring at times, the text is very smooth and pleasant to read.

Bk2 of my #MrBook1InAMillion #LitsyPartyOfOne #24B4Monday #readathon is done! While I did enjoy the story & the characters in this, I felt the ending was a bit rushed. It was one of those endings that felt like 5 chapters stuffed into 2(y‘all know what I mean)Still, it was not a bad way to spend a few hours. Hours stuck in bed coz my back decided today was a good day to lock up & go into spasm. Yay. At least I have plenty of reading material!

Lynnsoprano Oh, no! Hi hope it feels better soon. You‘re blowing everybody away with that reading time, tho. 😘 4y
Andrew65 Oh no!!! Just been through that with my wife who has had similar problems. 4y
Lizpixie @Lynnsoprano thanks! At least it gives me an excuse to do nothing but read, could do without the pain though😫 @Andrew65 I hope your wife is ok now, it sucks when it happens. It‘s not just the pain, though that‘s not fun, it‘s the being dependent on other people to do everything for you. It‘s demoralising. Thank god for reading. And the hubby. Him too😋 4y

Icecream break! I‘m about 3/4 finished with my 2nd book of my #MrBook1InAMillion #LitsyPartyOfOne #24B4Monday #readathon weekend. Phew, that‘s a mouthful. Definitely in cruising gear with my reading, don‘t know what to read next though. Should I stick with thrillers or switch it up again?🤔 Either way, I‘m going to enjoy my Salted Caramel & choc coated Hazelnuts icecream🍨

Ladyval05 I don‘t know what to recommend to read next, but I know that ice cream flavor sounds delicious! 🍦 4y
ljuliel That ice cream sure sounds good. And it sure looks like you‘ll easily get the 24 hours ! 4y
Andrew65 I always think the pace of thrillers or detective books is good for readathons. Impressive time as ever. 👏👏👏🙌👍😍 4y

Oops. I slept in just a bit(well, a lot)so I‘m only just starting today‘s section of #MrBook1InAMillion #24B4Monday #readathon & #LitsyPartyOfOne Kicking off with this rather battered library copy of Linwood Barclays 2nd novel about a violent home invasion that ends with an entire family dead. But what if the killers got the wrong house? I‘m sitting at just over 18hrs so far, let‘s see how many I can get today! #letsdothis

Andrew65 This was my first Barclay, and was totally hooked on him as an author ever since. 4y
Clwojick Oh, okay. Going to just go ahead and stack this one as well. Thank you. 😏 4y
