Creation of Anne Boleyn: A New Look at England's Most Notorious Queen
Creation of Anne Boleyn: A New Look at England's Most Notorious Queen | Susan Bordo
Part biography, part cultural history, "The Creation of Anne Boleyn" is a fascinating reconstruction of Anne s life and an illuminating look at her afterlife in the popular imagination. Why is Anne so compelling? Why has she inspired such extreme reactions? What did she really look like? Was she the flaxen-haired martyr of Romantic paintings or the raven-haired seductress of twenty-first-century portrayals? (Answer: neither.) And perhaps the most provocative questions concern Anne s death more than her life. How could Henry order the execution of a once beloved wife? Drawing on scholarship and critical analysis, Bordo probes the complexities of one of history s most infamous relationships. Bordo also shows how generations of polemicists, biographers, novelists, and filmmakers imagined and re-imagined Anne: whore, martyr, cautionary tale, proto mean girl, feminist icon, and everything in between. In this lively book, Bordo steps off the well-trodden paths of Tudoriana to expertly tease out the human being behind the competing mythologies."

Very good. Love how even though there are some sections that go over the history of her it doesn't feel repetitive. It focuses on how our perception of her has been shaped by many historians perception of her and how that because of this there are many Anne's and that she will always be influenced by this in future tellings of her story.

Library discards got me again. I was dropping off our returns in the slot and walked back to the car just as the library staff brought out the free book table. Well, I had to go look, right? It was a moral imperative! And now I have this #bookhaul to show for it. This makes seven in the last week.

Re: Anne Boleyn's execution: And then, at the end, I hope that nature or God (it makes no difference) gave her no more to figure out, no more to regret, no more to say goodbye to, no more work to do, and took care of her dying.

An excellent and engaging read. As an Anne Boleyn and general history nut, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's various perspectives on Anne Boleyn and her various public personas. The issues of feminism and gender politics are main themes and are very entwined with Anne. Breaking down the various authors, tv shows, and media portrayals of Anne were fascinating.

One of the best books I have read about Anne Boleyn. Instead of being portrayed as a home wrecker and whore, Anne is shown as a woman who was way ahead of her time. Henry VIII hunted Anne as he hunted with his hounds. Once the hunt was over, there was no challenge for him anymore and therefore she was discarded. If you love reading about Anne Boleyn please read this important book.

"Like Marilyn Monroe in our own time, she is an enigma who is hard to keep one's hands off of; just as men dreamed of possessing her in the flesh, writer's can't resist the desire to solve the mysteries of how she came to be, to reign, to perish."

What is there not to like? Susan Bordo + Tudors + Anne + myth busting = pure love.
