Sweet Caress
Sweet Caress | William Boyd
Born into Edwardian England, Amory's first memory is of her father standing on his head. She has memories of him returning on leave during the First World War. But his absences, both actual and emotional, are what she chiefly remembers. It is her photographer uncle Greville who supplies the emotional bond she needs, who, when he gives her a camera and some rudimentary lessons in photography, unleashes a passion that will irrevocably shape her future.A spell at boarding school ends abruptly and Amory begins an apprenticeship with Greville in London, photographing socialites for the magazine Beau Monde. But Amory is hungry for more and her search for life, love, and artistic expression will take her to the demi monde of Berlin of the late '20s, to New York of the '30s, to the blackshirt riots in London, and to France in the Second World War where she becomes one of the first women war photographers. Her desire for experience will lead Amory to further wars, to lovers, husbands, and children as she continues to pursue her dreams and battle her demons. In this enthralling story of a life fully lived, illustrated with "found?? period photographs, William Boyd has created a sweeping panorama of some of the most defining moments of modern history, told through the camera lens of one unforgettable woman, Amory Clay. It is his greatest achievement to date.

It was different than expected. I liked it. It tells the story of an eventful life that I didn‘t think would be possible to live, especially in the beginning of the 20th century. Boyd‘s narration is so authentic that I needed to google if the story is fictional or not. (It is.)

I was impressed by how the horrors of war were vividly shown without harping on around it too much.

If I manage to find more not my last Boyd-book.

But nothing is so bad that there ain‘t something good in it.

Being hungry means that I go and prepare my lunch – and this means: I can continue my audiobook. 📷🎧❤️ Audiolunch, quasi.

Audio-prepared my lunch this morning.
Why does all this cutting always take so long❓Does anybody have any idea❓Or, better still, any idea to speed that up❓

I don‘t feel like that time is wasted because I enjoyed my audiobook but I‘m just always surprised like: “Oh, that late already❓🤔”

I‘m still captured by my audiobook but also a bit surprised how avant-garde the beginning of the 20th century presented therein the was.

With today‘s commute I started this. After very few time I already I liked it because of the voice-actor and because of the writing style. It‘s a bit poetic but in a good, apt way not in a tawdry way. (This morning was one of the rare occasions where I felt it‘s a pity that I can‘t write down quotes while driving.)

I like Emery. She‘s a girl and forceful – which I feel was not necessarily a usual combination in the beginning of the 20th century.

My next audio-companion. About 13 hours long, to which I‘m – because of the blurb – really looking forward to. 😃

I picked up this one at a bookoutlet sale, a VERY long time ago, and shamefully have STILL not read it! 🤦‍♀️
It sounds so good, and I‘ve heard great things about this author. The MC, who is a photojournalist and fashion photographer, is described as complicated, vibrant and a passionate life traveler. The story spans the entire 20th century, and is said to capture significant moments in a life lived to its fullest.

Cinfhen That does sound good but I must admit, the cover & title is horrible 😜 6y
KarenUK @Cinfhen The title IS awful... 😂... but this one has so much Litsy love.. 6y

The fictional autobiography of a photographer, Amory Clay, who'd lived through the major events of the 20th century. And though I'm sure a professional photographer would never take #badselfportraits, fact remains, someone's chopped the head off that girl on the cover! #nofemmeber

Hands down this has been my favourite book of the year so far, possibly even of last year too. It tells the story of fictional photographer Amory Clay from her birth to her death and everything in between. It's not plot driven, but meanders through her life using a mix of narrative and supposed journal entries.

I loved Amory - she's complicated, strong and sometimes misunderstood. Completely unputdownable!

Pls excuse bad photo and chipped nails!

#blameitonlitsy ... bookoutlet sale! I really meant to not buy any books this week! 😬......

LeahBergen I restrained myself and only ordered 3 ... not my usual 14. That's going to set off alarm bells at the company and they are going to think that I'm signaling for help or something. 8y
Cinfhen Oh crap, I've been avoiding that site all day 🙀gotta go 8y
KarenUK @cinfhen @LeahBergen 😂😂😂... I even left the site trying to be good, but they did that email thing where they scare you to go back and log in, in case your items sell out! 8y

Suzze @LeahBergen 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 8y
Suzze I ordered 11. According to Goodreads, that gives me 306 physical books that I own but haven't read yet. 8y
jessberk13 Oh man I forgot about the sale!!!!! Someone please remind me of this in a few hours so I can go on when I get back from dinner! 8y
Cinfhen Thanks again @KarenUK ended up buying 8 books, but 3 were for other family members 🙈and I spent $32 with shipping...so it's REALLY, practically free😇 8y
Cinfhen @Suzze GoodReads does that? Like trying to shame us???😜That's NOT gonna work 8y
Suzze @Cinfhen No, I'm trying to shame myself. I have a shelf "own but not read" plus my Nook shelf and Kindle shelf that only have ebooks I haven't read. 8y

Do yourself a favor and do not read reviews on this book. Please, please, please do not check out an actual Amory Clay's biography until at the end and you will be surprised. The book contains amazing photo collection and beautifully crafted story. William Boyd is the master! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Halfway through on this book and love it. The female character described by a male author without whining emotions and complexity. There are many interesting photo inside and every chapter intrigues you more.

This didn't have the same emotional heft as Any Human Heart (an almost perfect book tbf) but Boyd does what he does best here - depicting normal people living extraordinary, thoughtful, well-worn, intelligent lives.

MyBookLife I added Any human heart :) The beach looks nice!! 8y
