The Daring Ladies of Lowell
The Daring Ladies of Lowell: A Novel | Kate Alcott
12 posts | 20 read | 5 to read
“Alice is cast in the mold of a character created by an earlier Alcott, the passionate and spunky Jo March. A refreshingly old-fashioned heroine, she makes THE DARING LADIES OF LOWELL appealing” --The New York Times Book Review “Offers up a compelling slice of both feminist and Industrial Age history”--Christian Science Monitor From the New York Times bestselling author of THE DRESSMAKER comes a moving historical novel about a bold young woman drawn to the looms of Lowell, Massachusetts--and to the one man with whom she has no business falling in love. Eager to escape life on her family’s farm, Alice Barrow moves to Lowell in 1832 and throws herself into the hard work demanded of “the mill girls.” In spite of the long hours, she discovers a vibrant new life and a true friend—a saucy, strong-willed girl name Lovey Cornell. But conditions at the factory become increasingly dangerous, and Alice finds the courage to represent the workers and their grievances. Although mill owner, Hiram Fiske, pays no heed, Alice attracts the attention of his eldest son, the handsome and reserved Samuel Fiske. Their mutual attraction is intense, tempting Alice to dream of a different future for herself. This dream is shattered when Lovey is found strangled to death. A sensational trial follows, bringing all the unrest that’s brewing to the surface. Alice finds herself torn between her commitment to the girls in the mill and her blossoming relationship with Samuel. Based on the actual murder of a mill girl and the subsequent trial in 1833, THE DARING LADIES OF LOWELL brilliantly captures a transitional moment in America’s history while also exploring the complex nature of love, loyalty, and the enduring power of friendship.

Found this in my local free library and enjoyed picturing what Lowell looked like a few hundred years ago. Felt a little predictable towards the end but still an easy and enjoyable read.

Historical fiction based at a textile mill, 1832, in Lowell, MA. Includes lots of interesting facts about the mill and life for young women employed there, plus a love story and courtroom drama (based on a real case from the time). https://cannonballread.com/2021/08/the-daring-ladies-of-lowell-a-novel-elcicco/

I‘m a little behind on the photo challenges but I‘ll have to get caught up this weekend.
The Daring Ladies of Lowell was a great #FriendshipBook about a group of mill workers in Massachusetts.
I am #CurrentlyReading The Saturday Evening Girls Club, also set in Massachusetts. Just getting started but sounds like another good #FriendshipBook.

When Alice arrives in Lowell in 1832, she's left her family's farm behind and dreams of making a new life for herself in the mills. She soon learns of problems at the mill, which come to a head when one of their own is murdered. And Alice just happens to have a fancy for the owner's son.

This was an okay read, but I kept wanting more somehow. The historical fiction (based on an actual murder trial) took a backseat to the romance.

bell7 I forgot to take a photo of the book itself, so here is a historic photo of a mill in my own hometown. 6y

Looking forward to a day off today filled with reading...and probably some sleep. Also, isn‘t the notebook my aunt got me for Christmas beauty!? I‘m using as my book journal this year 😊

The setting of this story was in #Lowell, #Massachusetts 1832. It's centered around the lives of the #cottonmill girls and their harsh working conditions in the factory. The story is really engaging, especially when the murder trial in the story was based on an actual murder of a mill girl and its subsequent trial in 1833.

This was a fun read. It's a good glimpse into what the lives of factory girls was like. The characters were annoying at time. And there is a fun love story.
