England in the Age of Chivalry . . . And Awful Diseases
England in the Age of Chivalry . . . And Awful Diseases: The Hundred YearsTM War and Black Death | Ed West
37 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
A revealing glimpse into the tumultuous history of Englands medieval period, full of knights in shining armor and terrible peasant suffering. Covering the violent and disease-ridden period between 1272 to 1399, England in the Age of Chivalry. . . And Awful Diseases covers the events, personages and ideas most commonly known as "medieval". This includes Geoffrey Chaucer, the Peasants revolt, the Scottish wars of independence, the Great Famine of 1315, the Black Death and the 100 Years War. Central to this time is King Edward III, who started the 100 Years War and defined the concept of chivalry, including England's order of the garter. His legacy continues to shape our view of Englands history and is crucial in understanding the development of Europe.

So many great tie-ins to Shakespeare‘s Richard II and even a few good ones for Henry IV (who is mostly quickly gone over and dismissed and I genuinely feel he should be. ““Henry was a usurper and a usurper he would remain.”) I was greatly amused by all the bad omens and amusing moments during Hank‘s coronation. It just doesn‘t get any better than that. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I found the snarky approach to history in this book absolutely lovely. I think if more history books were written this way, more people would enjoy it and see value in it. This makes it very easy to not take oneself too seriously, as many historians generally fall into the trap of doing. I would gladly teach a history course using a text like this. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 6y
GingerAntics Anyone who has any interest in English history or even Shakespeare‘s history plays would be well served to read this book (just remember, don‘t take yourself too seriously.) #EdWest #EnglandintheAgeofChivalryandAwfulDiseases #history #englishhistory #amusinghistory 6y

Sounds about right. I think this would still be the use of mental health facilities by the locals in some parts of the western world, if it were allowed.

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl this made me think of you. I think it would make your job infinitely harder, though. 6y
Weaponxgirl I would literally kill anyone who tried anything like that! 6y
GingerAntics You‘re probably not the only one. It‘s probably why this sort of this is not longer allowed. Too many deaths and all. 🙄 Sometimes it feels like that is the ONLY reason people “respect” mental health. 6y

Weaponxgirl I‘ve heard this before and it never made any kind of sense to me whatsoever 6y
Weaponxgirl I suppose it made you extra careful when buying/building a boat 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl sounds like it was superstition. Plus, if a woman didn‘t sink in water, she was a witch, so it was probably better luck to sink in water. lol 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl 🤣😂🤣 I thought you‘d gotten more civilised than America and done away with executions? 6y

Loving the little tidbits of Welsh history in this book (at least in this one chapter) that confirms the little details of #SarahWoodbury‘s #GarethandGwen series and both King Arthur Series.

This reminds me of #SarahWoodbury‘s tweet about the “Welsh Not” or “Welsh No” and how Welsh children would be beaten for speaking Welsh in school, even at recess. It was pretty messed up. I think what happened is that the Welsh kept their language alive just as a final, proverbial middle finger to the English.

GingerAntics @Texreader the second half of this week has been crazy, but I swear I‘m still reading this book. Such a fun history. We need more history books like this. I would totally teach a history class around a book like this. 6y

And they said “push presents” were a stupid modern idea!!! (Wonder if that also meant she got to keep his testicles? I‘ve heard women in labour enjoy verbally threatening any testicles in the room, most especially the pair that brought them to that moment. 🤷🏼‍♀️)

I‘m hoping this is a typo and it‘s meant to be “nobs.” 🤣😂🤣
#EdWest #EnglandintheAgeofChivalryandAwfulDiseases #history #englishhistory #amusinghistory

wanderinglynn I don‘t think it is a typo. According to what I‘ve read, it was popular in the 18th century for the upperclasses to speak backwards. And “Yobs” would be “boys” backwards & would indicate the antithesis of what a “good boy” should be. 6y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn but this was written in 2018 and it‘s about the 13th century. 6y
CSeydel “Yob” is British slang for a thug or a lout. 6y
See All 7 Comments
wanderinglynn Ah, sorry, I didn‘t mean to imply that the term was a 13th century term. But that it came out of the 18th century - backwards terms to indicated the opposite. As @CSeydel points out, the term has continued into present day usage. And a thug or lout would definitely be the opposite of a good boy. 😉 6y
Freespirit When I was growing up in 70's Australia we called a young thug/ layabout a "yobbo".. 6y
GingerAntics @CSeydel @wanderinglynn @Freespirit that‘s less entertaining than I was imagining. It was really it‘s a joke, though. (edited) 6y

Wow, this was the 13th century. You‘d think after all this time, people wouldn‘t fall for the “low-self-awareness populist xenophobia” ticket, but 2016 just proved idiots are still falling for this BS. Wow. Just wow. It‘d be funny if it wasn‘t so true.

GingerAntics @Texreader what have you done?! 🤣😂🤣 6y
julesG Now I need to read this since both of you like it. @Texreader 6y
GingerAntics @julesG I‘ve only read the intro so far, but as of right now I‘d say go for it. It‘s funny. I feel like if we taught kids history THIS way (maybe take out the fondling until they reach puberty or the teen years) kids would be interested in the stories of their own ancestors, countries, and the world. Maybe we could get people to learn the lessons of the past instead of repeating the same old mistakes. 6y

Wisecracks throughout make this a fun read, but it‘s like taking facts from a firehose. You really should have some understanding of English history to get some idea of what‘s going on. Even then, he jumps around a lot and often without transition. He has sacrificed an understandable narrative for his goal for this to be a “very very short” history.

GingerAntics I think this is next up, as it‘s so short. 🤞🏻 6y
Crazeedi Looks good!! 6y

Texreader @Itchyfeetreader @crazeedi @GingerAntics It was still a pick for me and I enjoyed it. I just admit to getting lost a lot. 6y
GingerAntics I wonder if it‘s meant to be thematic as apposed to chronological. 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics Absolutely. But he still jumps around and lacks transitions. It can be jarring. I‘ll be interested to hear what you think. 6y
Crazeedi @Texreader I'm going to investigate it 6y

I‘m definitely enjoying the writing style. Footnote 1 made me laugh out loud. On the names of the Edward Kings: “It makes no sense, but it‘s too late to change it now.”

GingerAntics For $1.99 this is officially in the line up. Just downloaded it. Can‘t wait to read this. Not sure how it‘s all going to work out with the Notre Dame de Paris read along and the Shakespeare read along, but this thing is happening. 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics Super fast read. You‘ll probably pass me up and finish it in a day. I could keep posting hilarious quotes too. 6y
GingerAntics This footnote alone seems like a footnote I‘d try to slip past a professor. lol Just started Da Vinci‘s Ghost today, so you‘ve probably got a few days head start, if not a week. 6y
