The Primal Wound
The Primal Wound: Understanding the Adopted Child | Nancy Newton Verrier
1 post | 4 read | 6 to read
Originally published in 1993, this classic piece of literature on adoption has revolutionised the way people think about adopted children. Nancy Verrier examines the life-long consequences of the 'primal wound' - the wound that is caused when a child is separated from its mother - for adopted people. Her argument is supported by thorough research in pre- and perinatal psychology, attachment, bonding and the effects of loss.

These are my #siblings, who I only discovered and met for the first time this year! 💞💞💞 All three of us were adopted, and share a birth mother. It is a testament to sisterhood how quickly we bonded that weekend, and since.

The tagged book is excellent because it acknowledges and validates the long-term impact of the feelings of trauma and abandonment many #adoptees experience, even those who are adopted at birth.
