Freud's analysis of Hoffman's "The Sandman" focuses on the mc's "castration complex" as a means of resolving the 'good' and 'bad' father figures in his psyche. Freud consistently misapprehended the accounts of childhood abuse his clients told him of, because how could the respectable burghers of Vienna who brought to him their wives, daughters and sons, be the same monsters who plagued their dreams, or the same men who paid his fees? ??

Bookwomble Consequently, Freud developed a psychological theory based on his inability to face the horrifying truth of patriarchal violence and abuse, presenting the world with the victim-blaming concepts of childhood sexual fantasizing over parents, ideas which, sadly, continue to give cover to paedophiles and abusers, especially when the perpetrators are people of "good (or royal) character". 3y

The Sandman is a nightmarish figure from the childhood memories of MC, Nathanael, & to what degree the characters Coppelius & Coppola are actually daemonic creatures or projections of Nathanael's fears, Hoffmann leaves the reader to decide. The most horrifying element for me was Nathanael's extreme narcissism, in which he was very much a pitiable victim as well as, ultimately, an abuser. There's lots of psychology to unpack, which Freud did, badly

Not *that* Sandman, but rather E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 gothic novella, being one of the stories from which Offenbach took inspiration for his opera, "The Tales of Hoffmann". It also provided grist for Sigmund Freud's mill, and this edition includes an extract from his essay, "The Uncanny", in which he examines the story from a psychoanalytic perspective. Sounds enticing! ?

When we read this back in school, I didn't like it. WAY to romantic, to much blah. Now that I've reread it after so many years, I came to like it. A lot. Yes, it's romantic. Dark and romantic, twisted. Just how I like it now.

I guess Hoffmann would be so confused now, seeing his nightmare is now reality. Poor fellow. But his book is still cutting-edge and visionary.

Last night of vacation with a collection of transposed short stories. The book is not in the database... it's called "From Wahnsinnig to the Loony Bin".

This is a very strange yet chilling story. I don't fully know what to take from it. I would love to hear other takes on the strange ending when Nathanial went berserk after seeing Clara through the spy-glass from off to side? It was pretty intense seeing as his episode resulted in him throwing himself off a ledge.

So this was my year in books. I'm sure that I'll read a few more before the end of the year. I'm finding it interesting to see everyone else's stats. I'm particularly drawn to the least popular books section of everyone's page. I feel like I want to check them out and give those authors a little tlc.

Leniverse Your least popular book is already on my TBR. (And yes, I too have read your most popular one.) 8y
Foxyfictionista @Leniverse oh excellent! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. My most popular one seems to be on quite a few stats that I've seen lately. Paula Hawkins did quite well for herself this year. ☺️ 8y
Leniverse It's guaranteed to be on my stats too, I don't read that many newer books. 😆I'm not posting my stats until later in the month, however. I have more books to finish first. 8y

quirkyreader Well I guess the goodreads year end post is motivating all of us to read even more. 8y
Foxyfictionista @Leniverse I waited until I hit my yearly target to post mine but I'll be interested to see what it looks like at the very end of the year. 8y
Foxyfictionista @quirkyreader Yes! I think so too! But honestly, Litsy has motivated me more than anything. I've never really been affected by FOMO until now, but all of these wonderful posts give me book FOMO something terrible. 😁 8y
courtney 11/22/63 was my longest read this year, too! 8y
Leniverse I had to look. Was surprised to see both the most and least popular books. Most: Divergent by Veronica Roth (I had forgotten I read that). The least popular I expected to be The Wanderer by Fanny Burney, but it turned out to be The Sword of Herobrine, a Minecraft fanfic I read with my youngest child. Don't feel like you should boost the rating. It really wasn't very good. 🙄 8y
Foxyfictionista @courtney It was such a good book. Did you like it? 8y
Foxyfictionista @Leniverse haha! Thanks for the warning. I don't believe I've ever read any fan fiction in my life. 8y
courtney @Foxyfictionista devoured it! I had some...criticisms with the dialogue but I feel that way with most King books 😂 8y
Reviewsbylola 11/22/63 😍😍😍 8y
Suet624 Let's see... which is longer? The Goldfinch or A Little Life. I read both. Both great. 8y
Foxyfictionista @courtney I can understand that. 8y
Foxyfictionista @Suet624 i haven't read either but A Little Life is on my tbr list. 8y
tpixie Congrats! All you guys out me to shame! But I keep slowly plugging along!! I may have to give up a few TV shows!! 8y
Foxyfictionista @tpixie Thank you! No shame, though!! You do your thing. We all have different schedules and lives which is what makes us so we are. 😊 8y
BkClubCare Hi, just 'meeting' you here but had to chuckle because we have similar counts - have read 78 and abt same page count! (I can't figure out how to find the gr banner tho on my phone app - how DID you make this image to share?) (edited) 8y
Foxyfictionista @BkClubCare We're book twins!!! I couldn't work out how to do this on my phone so I just took a picture of my PC monitor. 😆 8y
BkClubCare I also meant to add that GOTT was my most pop and I have read Herland but it was a few years ago 8y
Foxyfictionista @BkClubCare I look forward to seeing your year in books. ☺️ 8y
tpixie @Foxyfictionista ❤📚❤ 8y
princess_dennie_pants GOTT was my most popular book this year too 8y

The Sandman was originally published in 1816. I read the book through the Serial Reader App. Because this is a short story, I think I would have enjoyed it better reading it all in one sitting, rather than broken up into seven sections. Still, there was much creepiness in the story. I give this one a cautious recommendation, 3 of 5 stars.

EKonrad I just started using this app and think it's awesome. Have you read any other books using Serial? 😊 8y
ReadingOver50 @Ekonrad I also read Jane Eyre. I am trying to decide on my next read 😄 8y
