I would use Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe to help students think about imagination, science, and empathy. The story encourages “what if” thinking and connects to lessons on cause and effect, perspective, and problem solving. Its mix of humor and emotion makes it engaging for upper-elementary readers while encouraging meaningful discussion about how our choices affect others.

Carlos Hernandez‘s 2020 Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe uses speculative fiction to explore what happens when curiosity meets responsibility. The story exaggerates the power of technology and imagination through Sal‘s ability to open portals between worlds, but it mirrors our own world‘s desire to fix problems without always thinking of the consequences. Hernandez makes readers question how far we should go when trying to make things right.
“Except that Papi texted me to come right away. Something about fixing the universe?“ This quote represents two things. One is what the books about and second the cuban culture.
I personally really like the idea behind this book because I have always liked science fiction. This book also uses some Cuban influences in relation to the family aspect of the book as well as the culture that the characters have.
Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe by Carlos Hernandez. Science Fiction. This book is science fiction because it talks about the wormholes and how they have been opened and how it causes parallel universities to be opened as well. In this book Sal and Gabi try to fix what they have done to the universe.

First was better, but it‘s still really good. And apparently a series? (Based on that ending there‘d better be more) Lots of Cuban/Miamian culture, some nice Spanish thrown in. Sal lives with diabetes and the author handles that well, making it important and no big deal at the same time. It‘s more sci-fi (AIs/multiverse) than most of the RR Presents I‘ve read. And a lot of potty humor (there‘s literally a sentient toilet).

“‘We are thinking things through carefully and logically, you jar of farts.‘”
Ah, middle school humor. Still gets me.
I loved the first one. This one was more meh, lots of new stuff, lots of things left unanswered. Why emojis in the text??? Whyyyyyyyyyy.

I loved book 1 so much I had to have book 2. Plus how can I pass us a manga that involves a library? 😁
