It's a snowy day here, so I went to the used book store. I was very successful. #bookhaul

I was unfamiliar with this author until I saw him speak on a historical fiction panel last month. Billy Boyle is a former Boston cop who becomes a military investigator during WWII. His first assignment is in England at Beardsley Hall which is the home of the Norwegian government in exile. He‘s on the lookout for a spy and stumbles upon the murder of a Norwegian official while he‘s at it. I enjoyed it and will pick up more books in the series.

Crazeedi Looks intriguing! 5y
Ncostell @Crazeedi Yes, I enjoyed the mystery but also liked learning about a piece of WWII history that I did not know about. 5y

Now for a mystery story set during World War II in England, with a side trip to Norway. Perhaps the novel tried to do too much with the latter sub-plot. Also, a tragic death meant not as positive a review from my part.

While the performance isn't what I hoped for in this #Audiobook- it's still a great start to this WWII series! It's been almost exactly nine years since I read this the first time, and I'm excited to binge on the rest of the series! #Audiocoloring

Overall enjoyable. I liked the setting and mostly liked Billy. His impressing people with exotic American slang wore a bit thin, though. Felt like a Mary Sue/Marty Stu kind of behaviour 😜 I would have also liked more female characters, which I know is difficult in an army setting, but maybe in the next book?

A selection of mysteries I own that were originally published in the 2000s. #readjanuary

DGRachel I look at that Billy Boyle book every time I am in B&N. I haven't bought it...yet. 7y
rabbitprincess @DGRachel My copy is from a used book sale. I liked the cover! 7y
DGRachel I love the passport to crime books. I just can't decide if this is one I want to read. I'll be watching for your review. 😉 7y
rabbitprincess @DGRachel According to the Soho Press website, The Ghosts of Belfast is also a Passport to Crime book! I'll have to try to get to both of those books this year. 7y
DGRachel I listened to Ghosts of Belfast years ago on audiobook. I don't remember much about it, other than i enjoyed it. 7y

Historical fiction and a mystery is a great combination for me. Learning about an aspect of WWII that I knew nothing about made it even better! And I met the author in May!

MrBook You talked me into it! 😊 8y

I read this is part of my ongoing project to read the entire catalog of Soho Crime Press! Billy Boyle is a newly-minted, Irish American cop from Boston who finds himself among the nobility in England. His mission - find a spy, solve a mystery and don't embarrass his Uncle Ike. Loved his voice.
