It's a gem of a story.Laura Moriarty, author of The Chaperone For a small-town girl with big-city dreams, there is no address more glamorous than New Yorks Barbizon Hotel. Laura, a patrician beauty from Smith, arrives to work at Mademoiselle for the summer. Her hopelessly romantic roommate, Dolly, comes from a working-class upstate town to attend secretarial school. Vivian, a brash British bombshell with a disregard for the hotels rules, rounds out the trio of friends. Together, the girls embark on a journey of discovery that will take them from the penthouse apartments of Park Avenue to the Beat scene of Greenwich Village to Atlantic Citys Steel Pier and into the arms of very different men who will alter their lives forever.

#3books #thatmadememad or at least really irritated me!
-800 grapes, the main character was SO obnoxious, self-centered and interfering, but I felt like the author wants us to like her!😡
- Still Life with breadcrumbs, again I felt like the author wants readers to root for the MC, but she is SO condescending and pompous!😡
- Searching for Grace Kelly, the author seems to be SO judgmental of his female characters, and punishes them accordingly! 😡

KarenUK Finished all three because they were for bookclubs/challenges or I would definitely have DNF‘d! 4y

I picked this one up at a second hand store and took it away with me on holiday. It was a nice read, set in New York in 1955. It tells the story for three young women who have moved to city to start their news lives! #bookcover

1. ⬆️ I hated how the author made simplistic moral judgements about his own (female) characters and appeared to punish them accordingly! 😡
2. Qi and Jonathan Creek (I love Alan Davies💕!)
3. Marmite on whole grain toast
4. Eastern (US)
5. Red Bird Bewildered! 🤟😂 (I have a patterned dress on!)

3 star read and I am pretty sure I've read this before on Kindle.

Set in 1950s NYC three women meet in a hotel for ladies of a certain social standing. Each are in the city to follow their own dreams, be it to be a writer, to escape the Midwest or to escape a strict unloving upbringing. This is a tale of friendship, love, self-development...an easy read for a winter evening.

#day5 #photoadaynov16 #threwitacrosstheroom .. not literally (read it as ebook!) but this was an infuriating book. High expectations... was hoping for Peggy Olsen-esque characters 'making it' in NYC... got an insipid protagonist and an author who seemed to give happy endings to chaste characters and punish the 'less moral' characters with awful endings! I can't stand it when a male author seems to judge his female characters like that! Grrrrrr 😬

KarenUK If it hadn't been for my book club I would have bailed for sure.... 7y
Verity Sounds like it should have been right up my street- but I'll make a note to avoid it now. 7y
juliannebenford Ugh, that's so disappointing. 7y

Really really enjoyed it. It radiates 1950s glamour throughout. Romantic yet tragic. Adorable yet also made of stronger stern stuff. A wonderful tale of fashion, love, betrayal, glamour but above all it focuses on the unforgettable bonds of friendship. Must-read. 5 out of 5.
