Dead Scared
Dead Scared | Sharon Bolton, S. J. Bolton
15 posts | 27 read | 9 to read
When a rash of suicides tears through Cambridge University, DI Mark Joesbury recruits DC Lacey Flint to go undercover as a student to investigate. Although each student's death appears to be a suicide, the psychological histories, social networks, and online activities of the students involved share remarkable similarities, and the London police are not convinced that the victims acted alone. They believe that someone might be preying on lonely and insecure students and either encouraging them to take their own lives or actually luring them to their deaths. As long as Lacey can play the role of a vulnerable young woman, she may be able to stop these deaths, but is it just a role for her? With her fragile past, is she drawing out the killers, or is she herself being drawn into a deadly game where she's a perfect victim? Dark and compelling, S. J. Bolton's latest thrillera follow-up to the acclaimed Now You See Meis another work of brilliant psychological suspense that plumbs the most sinister depths.

I rarely give 5 stars, but this book truly deserves them all.
The plot revolves around strange cases of apparent suicide at Cambridge University. There, our detective will start investigating.
Flowing text, suspense, plot twists, but also heartbreaking love will give life to a story capable of keeping you glued until the last page.

I finished this one tonight. I liked her first one in the Lacey Flint series more, and I read 1.5 and this one this month. This was good, but there were a few things that bugged me. Still, pressing on in the series because I heard they get better.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 2y

2nd book in the Lacey Flint series and Lacey has been sent off to Cambridge University to pose as a student because of student suicides. Lacey meets up with Evi Oliver, student counsellor. Both begin to deteriorate emotionally similar to the students. I found The plot fast-paced. Lacey's relationship with Mark Joesbury doesn‘t seem to work. I found the ending left some loose ends. Recommend this series to those who like psychological suspense.

rretzler I have this one and the first one in my TBR pile, but I don‘t want to read them out of order and I won‘t get the first done in time. Have fun! 5y

Second installment in the Lacey Flint series, this detective novel finds its MC going undercover at Cambridge University when it's discovered that the number of suicides is higher than the usual level. Is the pressure just getting to more students or is it something else altogether? Even more of a psychological thriller than the first book, Bolton does a tremendous job of both freaking you out and reeling you in. Highly recommended!

I wish I had read the synopsis before I dove into this one as I just don‘t think I was in the right head space for it. Deals with an unusually high number of suicides at Cambridge. Given events of the past few weeks it just made me feel icky. I‘m still enjoying this series but I desperately need a palate cleanser. 3 ⭐️

This is a thriller that I love! I made the mistake of reading part of it at night and ended up freaking myself out. Sharon Bolton is an amazing author and in some ways is darker than Tana French. Thank you to @Liberty for doing another fun day of giveaways! #GIVEAWAYTHRILLER

Liberty You won the giveaway! Please email your name and address to Liberty at Book Riot dot com and I‘ll send you the books. 🎉 7y

Although not as thrilling as Now You See Me, and somewhat predictable, Dead Scared gives more character development to our heroine and her "partner." Picking up a few months after the copycat Ripper murders burn through London that left everyone scarred, including Lacey. When Mark Joesbury recruits Lacey to pose as a Cambridge college student to get to the bottom of a string of suicides, Lacey has to push the emotional scars her last case left.

"This isn't your car..."
"Isn't it?"
Now she was in it the car smelled gorgeous; like sweet oranges and tiny white flowers on a tropical evening, and what the fuck was he now, a poet?

Maybe guilt would be like a heavy downpour from above, the first drops hardly noticeable, but gradually seeping through him until his entire being was drenched in it.

You guys- I hate to dump on you, but I need to voice this somewhere. From emails that have been sent in the last day or so, I am terrified that I am going to be laid off (lack of work) before I have another job offer. I heard from the last interview today, and they have the intention of offering me a position, but they have to wait for contracts to come through, which could be up to 2 months. I've never lost a job before & don't know what to do.

Wife I'm sorry that I don't have any advice, but you have all my best wishes that everything works out. The waiting must be awful. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 8y
Megabooks It's scary. I'm not going to lie. But both times it's happened to me, I've pivoted my career and come out better and making more money. Just don't panic. Really think about other opportunities you could grow into if needed. Make lists of positive contributions you've made and your best qualities and accomplishments. Keep that list fresh both to network and to boost your self esteem. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 8y
Amandajoy I would say if you're looking for a new job already you're ahead of the game. When I was laid off I ended up going back to school. It's scary, but you'll make it through. 8y

Texreader Oh my goodness. Best wishes that you find an awesome replacement soon. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. I also start tightening my belt at home deciding what necessities I can live without. I had a scare of earlier this year when my clients started cutting back on my projects because of the uncertain economy. Things have turned around as I hope they do for you. 8y

For my pick for #Recommendsday. Dead scared was an awesome book that truly played with my imagination. Any fan of Tana French should give Sharon Bolton a try. In my opinion she is a little darker and tends to go with some creepy ideas... I LOVED this book. I read a lot at night and a couple of times creeped myself out. #GiveaScaryBook

Even crazier than the first 😱 I like my thrillers gritty and disturbing, and this series definitely delivers. The ending was probably too abrupt and I could've done without the romance subplot, but at the end of the day, I was thoroughly creeped out 👍🏻
