Based on a real person. Listened to the audio, which wavered in and out on holding my attention (or not). Some parts I liked, but overall, ok. Had a hard time with a couple of parts about injured animals. I‘m not sure I particularly liked any of the characters. Except for one secondary character (due to the unusual name), I tended to get the secondary characters mixed up. One of the good things: descriptions of hardships encountered: loss, fire...

This my version of a magical 4th. It is AK hot ~ mid 70s. I like Mrs. Mike so far. I do dream of a modern rewrite; I‘m happy to be familiar enough with the north to see the problematic aspects. There are many unsavory depictions of First Nation‘s People (In AK Native or Eskimo is the term, though Eskimo is not used in Canada). At the time of pub (1943) I hope that Kathy‘s concern would have raised some in the reader as well #canada #america #yukon

This is a newer edition of a book that I read and re-read again and again when I was younger. It‘s the story of a 16-year-old girl who travels to Calgary to visit relatives and falls in love with and marries a Canadian Mounty. The story of their love and life together and the hardships they faced in the harsh climate was one I couldn‘t get enough as a teen.

My mom read this to me when I was a little girl. I found this pretty copy at a charming bookstore in Claremore, Oklahoma.

I was correct; this is a really good book. The 1900s Canadian North is a sharp contrast to our world today, so the book isn't for the faint at heart; there's lots of wilderness and heartbreak. The mixture of the ways of life and ways of thinking of the natives, transplants, and their combination in future generations is interesting and entertaining. This book definitely reminds you of what is important and what is not. I absolutely recommend!

I remember reading this many, many years ago and thinking it was pretty darn good. Reading again now to make sure I was correct.

Spent most of my morning reading and finishing this 1947 tale of a young girl who marries a Mountie and lives at a remote outpost in Canada in early 20th century. Good storytelling. Blurb says "heartwarming" on this paperback but it is not a light read - very tragic at times. A little like my experience of reading Lonesome Dove in some ways, though more romantic in terms of plot.

A man, who we really don't learn much about in terms of why he was appealing, marries a child. They live in the Canadian wild and condescend to native people. The man continues to treat his wife patronizingly, and lots of people die.

This is definitely not my genre of choice - I read it for a book club. I just really, really didn't understand the appeal. I guess I liked some things about Kathy, so that's my positive?

I am reading this for my book club, and I am struggling. It is just is not my type of story. Help. Did you love it? Tell me why I should love it.

I first read this story when I was 12. Forty years ago. I have read it so many times that two copies have split at the spine, pages flying away like OhBeJoyful! My third copy sits in a place of honour on my bookshelves but alas, it does not have this iconic cover. If I ever find a copy with this cover I will snag it for sure. #funfridayphoto

A favorite that I've read many times. Both of my daughters read it at my insistence. They liked it too.
