The History of the Ancient World: From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome
The History of the Ancient World: From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome | Susan Wise Bauer
A lively and engaging narrative history showing the common threads in the cultures that gave birth to our own. This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. Dozens of maps provide a clear geography of great events, while timelines give the reader an ongoing sense of the passage of years and cultural interconnection. This old-fashioned narrative history employs the methods of history from beneathliterature, epic traditions, private letters and accountsto connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled. The result is an engrossing tapestry of human behavior from which we may draw conclusions about the direction of world events and the causes behind them.

Listening to some more history today while engaging in a modern take on a prehistoric activity. "The fragile peace of the united Israel lasted barely a hundred years." Sheesh.

quote
Tikabelle

"And so the land between the two rivers entered a dark age. And for a hundred years or so, no history emerges from the blackness." The thing that strikes me most about ancient history is how casually a hundred years of brutality gets passed by. Generations lived and died; my whole life so far isn't even half of that time period. But it's also somehow comforting; humans find a way. Always.

This was my favorite book that I read in 2016!!! I listened it on #audio, which may have helped me get more out of it. SWB provides incredible insight into civilization's earliest times & provided clarity on the history-repeats-itself adage. Excellent context for understanding macro-historical trends in the present-day. I'd highly recommend it with (#pairwith) any good white wine. What was your favorite read in 2016?! 😁👏🏻👏🏻 #BestBookRead

I listen to this audiobook whenever I need to relax--dental appointments, stressful flights, or, like now, sleepless nights. I've heard the first few hours of this book at least ten times. The history of the world is surprisingly soothing. Do other people have any audiobooks they use this way? (By the way, the book is great-- I just need to get it in hard copy so I can finally finish it!)

readinginthedark I listen to audiobooks all the time, usually when I'm too tired or distracted to focus on a page, so I get it! 8y
LindsayReads Ditto 👆. I can't wait to jump back into Cleopatra. I think the world history aspect will help me, too. 8y
rabbitprincess I use the audio of Morrissey's autobiography for stress relief because it is narrated by *David* Morrissey 😍 8y

annahenke My go to is Harry Potter narrated by Jim Dale 8y
BeththeBookDragon @annahenke Jim Dale is amazing. He recorded Peter Pan too, if you get a chance to check it oit 8y
Aseleener My husband has this on Audible too. I think he's about halfway through. 8y
LectricSheep @lindsayreads @readinginthedark @rabbitprincess @annahenke I'm not alone! 👋My partner listened to Jim Dale's Harry Potter to fall asleep all through his third (and hardest) year of medical school @bethfriedman906, so I second Dale's amazing soothing qualities. @Aseleener it's a hefty commitment! And the narrator is so relaxing...💤 8y
readinginthedark Simon Vance and John Lee are two more really relaxing ones! 8y
LectricSheep @readinginthedark just looked up Simon Vance-- he narrates "English society in the 18th century," which sounds like it has just the right ??factor for my audiobook tastes! 8y
readinginthedark @LectricSheep 😆I can't tell whether that's a compliment or complaint! But I get it. 8y
LectricSheep @readinginthedark definite compliment! 👍 8y
Mrskturner Is this on audible?!? 8y
Mrskturner Oh my goodness! Life changing for my auditory kid! Thank you for sharing this! 8y

This worked as a great read aloud. Yes, sometimes we got bogged down by names, but overall, a lot was learned and the kids found themselves recognizing historical references and content everywhere. Onward to History of the Medieval World: From the Conversion of Constantine to the First Crusade. #homeschool #historyrocks

It's #recommendsday!📚
And it's #nonfictionnovember
So here's a great nonfiction rec.
This big book covers ancient history as far back as it reliably can.
The chapters are short. There are TONS of great maps. Timelines continuing the story and comparing to other regions at the same time are VERY helpful.
The only thing missing is that it doesn't touch on the Western Hemisphere at all. I suspect that's because of a dearth of records.
Read this!📚

Nothing makes me happier than opening a recent second hand book purchase to find a bookmark inside! My favourites have been a business card in Swedish, an old plane boarding pass and this fun flag playing card (currently in use). Even better... It's an Ace of Spades! #booktober #bookmarks #motorheadforthewin @RealLifeReading

This was a really fantastic thorough recap of history, told in a way that keeps your interest and holds it for the entirety of the book.
