The Newbery-winning fantasy series now available in gorgeous new paperback editions! Since The Book of Three was first published in 1964, young readers have been enthralled by the adventures of Taran the Assistant Pig-Keeper and his quest to become a hero. Taran is joined by an engaging cast of characters that includes Eilonwy, the strong-willed and sharp-tongued princess; Fflewddur Fflam, the hyperbole-prone bard; the ever-faithful Gurgi; and the curmudgeonly Doliall of whom have become involved in an epic struggle between good and evil that shapes the fate of the legendary land of Prydain. Released over a period of five years, Lloyd Alexanders beautifully written tales not only captured childrens imaginations but also garnered the highest critical praise. The Black Cauldron was a Newbery Honor Book, and the final volume in the chronicles, The High King, crowned the series by winning the Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.Henry Holt is proud to present this classic series in a new, redesigned paperback format. The jackets feature stunning art by acclaimed fantasy artist David Wyatt, giving the books a fresh look for todays generation of young fantasy lovers. The companion book of short stories, The Foundling is also available in paperback at this time. In their more than thirty years in print, the Chronicles of Prydain have become the standard of excellence in fantasy literature for children.

So far my least favorite of the series. I thought I was gonna get a nice story centered around Eilonwy and instead got Taran running around the forest for majority of the book and her being nonexistent in the whole story until the end when she does appear and her will is completely stripped of her, zero signs of that strong willed girl from the two earlier books. Just a let down to be honest.

imyril I enjoyed this one as a kid, but as an adult it's my least favourite too - it feels like lots of railroading characters to do things for plot convenience and sells Eilonwy short. That said: it brings back Achren - I'm always here for Achren :) 3y
Sweetkokoro @imyril I can‘t get into liking Achren and it‘s probably due to there never been enough of her in the stories. This one really got sidetracked and focused way to much on Taran and his “lost in the woods and being angry with Prince Rhun” bit. Definitely the most disappointing so far for me. 3y
imyril @Sweetkokoro fair. I‘ll be curious to see what you make of Taran Wanderer! 3y

I love these books so much. I wish I had a niece or a nephew I could gift the whole set to for Christmas!

I believe front cover would draw children in because of the flames engulfing the castle

The Castle or Llyr by Lloyd Alexander published in 1966 tells a story of a Princess. The Princess has to leave her home and all her friends to be trained to be a proper lady.

Trying to get back to the normal routine after spending the long weekend camping, but still lots of things to get caught up on. I'll be playing Quotsy catchup tomorrow! In the meantime, here's Minerva with my current read. #CatsofLitsy 😻

I don't really make TBR plans, but here's a couple of short books I hope to finish this weekend. After that, I have no idea what I'll read next. #AugustTBR #ReadingResolutions

Book 3 of the chronicles of Prydain teases the reader with backstory knowledge of one of the main characters, but never really delivers with any gusto. We learn enough to add the shallowest amount of depth, but that's all. That said, this is a wonderful adventure story that indeed adds go the overall scope of the overarching tale.

I remember liking this book the least as a child reading the series, and while I can see why, I actually enjoyed this audio version quite a bit! And while I haven‘t had time for #audiocoloring on my vacation, this older picture seemed fitting! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

#magicalmarch #Castles This is part of Alexander‘s retelling of the Mabinogion. I almost went with Evangeline Walton‘s “the children of llyr” instead but not only is it not in the database, it also has no castle in the title💁🏻‍♀️🏰.
