The 2010 Newbery Honor Book by highly acclaimed author Rodman Philbrick is now in paperback! In this Newbery Honor-winning page-turner, twelve-year-old orphan Homer runs away from Pine Swamp, Maine, to find his older brother, Harold, who has been sold into the Union Army. With laugh-aloud humor, Homer outwits and outruns a colorful assortment of civil War-era thieves, scallywags, and spies as he makes his way south, following clues that finally lead him to Gettysburg. Even through a hail of gunfire, Homer never loses heart--but will he find his brother? Or will it be too late? With engaging wit and comical repartee reminiscent of Mark Twain, master storyteller Rodman Philbrick introduces us to the unforgettable character of Homer in his latest groundbreaking novel.

Apparently that‘s how they do it when you‘re sold to the army for a jug of whiskey and a lie

Review: The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick, 2009, is a historical fiction book about a boy on a mission to find his older brother, set during the Civil War.
Blurb: This book is a good example of the genre because although it's fiction there are factual things about the time period, along with real vocab that is defined later on.
Quote: “That's how it all started out, true adventures, with Harold sticking up for me.“

This HF book written by Rodman Philbrick has gotten a Newbery award. This story takes place in Civil War times, Homer is trying to save his brother who was sold into the war. I think this book would be a fantastic book to read as a LC. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 https://www.scholastic.com/content/dam/teachers/lesson-plans/migrated-featured-f... This lesson plan from scholastic I think is perfect if you are reading this book in a LC. This allows members of the group to summarize what happened in each chapter. This can rotate around the group as the book is read. 5y
LaGasseSam1996 UDL 2.3 would work with the lesson plan above. To summarize the text you first need to decode what is major and what is a minor part of the text. Not everything in each chapter is an important part of the story. The student needs to be able to determine was is useful and what may not be. 5y
LaGasseSam1996 ESOL 2 works well in small groups which is what a LC is. I think working in the group will allow the ELL student to really understand the text and will be able to have clarification from their group mates on anything they do not understand fully. 5y
DrSpalding Scholastic is a high-quality resource as well. Continue to use this in the future. (edited) 5y

I‘m impressed that this passage is found in a middle-grade novel. So many times children‘s novels gloss over historical subject matter, when there is a way to make a difficult subject matter both age appropriate, educational, engaging, and in depth. And still relevant today.

So far, this novel strikes a perfect tone. #BattleoftheBooks

Just_reading I was impressed with the writing of this book as well! 5y

My daughter has been studying Homer P Figg in preparation for #battleofthebooks. She is making good use of the sushi sticky tabs that came in a #bookswap! 🍣 🍙🍱

The Thieves EO is for our immune system. If her lethargy and lack of appetite is anything to go buy, she is either recovering from a long school week after winter break, or coming down with the virus I just recovered from. 😕

Mom brag moment! M‘s school participates in Battle of the Books, and they only select six 4th and six 5th graders to be on the school team, out of 40+ kids who applied. She made the cut!

These are 4 of the 6 books for this year‘s competition; she has to become an expert on the top two in the pile. #bookmail #bookhaul #battleofthebooks

Homer P. Figg is a humorous story of a boy searching for his brother who was sold into service during the Civil War. Homer is a delightful character who knows how to spin a yarn! If there is trouble nearby, Homer will manage to find it. Philbrick squeezes in tons of Civil War history. Grades 3 & up!
