Daughters of the North
Daughters of the North | Sarah Hall
10 posts | 14 read | 21 to read
In this stunning novel, Sarah Hall imagines a new dystopia set in the not-too-distant future. England is in a state of environmental crisis and economic collapse. There has been a census, and all citizens have been herded into urban centers. Reproduction has become a lottery, with contraceptive coils fitted to every female of childbearing age. A girl who will become known only as "Sister" escapes the confines of her repressive marriage to find an isolated group of women living as "un-officials" in Carhullan, a remote northern farm, where she must find out whether she has it in herself to become a rebel fighter. Provocative and timely, Daughters of the North poses questions about the lengths women will go to resist their oppressors, and under what circumstances might an ordinary person become a terrorist. Includes an excerpt from Sarah Hall's new book The Beautiful Indifference.

Parts of this were really well thought out and written to keep me thinking. Then it seemed less so. I wonder if this is indicative of it being written as a statement or account.
It has stayed in my mind a lot though... even dreamt about it :/

I finished my 5th and final book for #24in48 with 2 minutes to go in the readathon, so I‘m calling it.

This book has a great concept, but it‘s lacking in real plot. It was kind of all over the place, and all of the building tension just fizzled out with an ending that seemed rushed.

Maybe I‘m over dystopian, but I think it was probably just this book that didn‘t do it for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Readerann 5 books!! Woo hoo! 📚📚 5y
Cconnolly Oooh, have you read The Blinds yet? 5y
sprainedbrain @Cconnolly nope... that‘s my shelf of BOTMs that I still need to read. Do you want to borrow it? 😉 5y

Meh. A great idea in search of a compelling plot. Just when you think there's some progress and action finally arriving, boom, it's all over. Disappointing after a promising start.

Hmm, not sure about this one. I'll finish it - on audiobook - this afternoon. I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic books and while this isn't a complete disappointment, it does seem thin on a plot. Let's see if the end redeems it.

Cathythoughts Look forward to hearing the end result. 😉as for myself I'd better get off Litsy for awhile & get some reading done ✅ 7y

Bereft after finishing The Handmaid's Tale on television, I need another fix of dystopian female struggles. Very high hopes for this one.

And these are the ones I have read before (either from the library or on kindle) but want to own in physical copies. #bookstoreaccident

"Mine was a different kind of sickness. I didn't feel listless or oppressed. I didn't want drugs or numbness to mask my consciousness. I knew that everything around me was wrong. I could see it. I could sense it. And I had not yet found a voice with which to make my arguments. It still lay somewhere inside me, unexpressed, growing angrier."

this book is due in 4 days and I have twelve waiting for me on hold 🙈🙈🙈🙈 I know all you librarians out there say you love voracious readers but I'm not sure mine love it as much as you

BookishFeminist Omg my holds are always out of control 😱 I'm pretty sure my librarians are like OMG this bitch again how does she read this many 8y
Pinkmeghan I've actually had a librarian tell her colleague that she looks at my holds and checks out what I pick bc I always pick out "the good ones"! Lol ? 8y
Owlizabeth I made it in and out of the library twice in the past 24 hours without picking up anything except the one hold I had in. I only have 14 books checked out now!!! #librarylover #4weekcheckouts 8y

Owlizabeth @BookishFeminist I got major shade from a librarian once!! Like, to my face, she said "Are you gonna read *all* of these?" YUUUUUP!! 8y
maximoffs @BookishFeminist see my thing is, I used to never go to libraries and just read ebooks but I LOVE BOOKS so now that I have such an amazing library system I just can't help myself. I do have a DNF mark so many of mine are returned when I've only read that far? But yeah we have a 10 books a day limit 🙄🙄 8y
maximoffs @Pinkmeghan what a compliment! 8y
BookishFeminist @Owlizabeth That's happened to me too! I returned like 20 books and the librarian was like you finished all those?! YEP wish renewals but YEP. 8y
BookishFeminist @steverogers 10 book a day?! Oof that would not work for me, lol 8y
maximoffs @BookishFeminist they've waived it for me in the past 8y
maximoffs @BookishFeminist but yes 10 a day 8y
Pinkmeghan @steverogers umm yeah 10 books a day for a limit is ridiculous. I've never seen a daily limit, I've seen a total checkout limit. Does that include any ebooks you can check out? 8y
Megabooks I can only check out 7 between e and regular. #juggling I read 4+ books a week. ☹️ 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Weird system. The library I work at has no limits, but when people ask I say 'as much as you can carry' (when you say it to kids their eyes really light up 😂) but we do have fines for late returns. 8y
maximoffs @Pinkmeghan they can override it! And no it doesn't 8y
