I don't #believe in God but thought I ought to read this for my social justice challenge. #literaryluck @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @vkois88

scowler1 You're braver than I am! Good luck finishing that. 5y
Princess-Kingofkings The King James version is very difficult to read. A chronological Bible would be better. The Message wild be best for the circumstances you describe. in my opinion... 5y
Caterina NIV, NRSV, and ESV are all free and actual translations, unlike the Message which is a paraphrase, and they are much easier to read than KJV. There are probably free "read the Bible in a year" apps out there with better translation options too, that's a common Christian thing to try to do. 5y
SleepyDragon I suggest almost any translation other than King James, quite honestly. I found NIV preferable when I was a protestant. 5y
vkois88 Kudos to you! 5y

I did it! 287 issues. The King James Bible read from start to finish.
I can hardly believe it‘s over. And I say with some emphasis that I will not do it again. 😅

merelybookish That is an accomplishment!! 🎉🎉 Any book that you did like/ find beautiful? 5y
Graywacke Not ready for another go? 🙂 I‘m seriously curious though: How long did it take? Was it audio? If so, how was the reader? (edited) 5y
rockpools Wow! 🎉🎉🎉 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Graywacke This screen shot I recognize from Serial Reader, it‘s a free app that takes classics free in the public domain and delivers them to you in a serial format, with an installment each day, that‘s usually about a 15 minute read. So think like the old stories released in serial fashion in magazines. So the number of issues, 287, is how many days an installment was sent. It‘s really a great app. @SerialReader (edited) 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Wow! That is so impressive! That is an accomplishment you should be very proud of! But yes, I wouldn‘t want to do it again either....if anything go for some variety and try another religious text next year. They have the Quran too I believe. 5y
Leniverse @merelybookish The Song of Solomon is lovely. And I enjoyed the crazy magical exploits of Elijah and Elisha in Kings I and II. I might read the gospels again in the future. I find it fascinating to compare them, and almost every line has made it into popular culture and sayings. 5y
Leniverse @Graywacke Yes, like @Riveted_Reader_Melissa says, I used the Serial Reader app. It took me a bit longer than 287 days, because I fell behind at times. I also found that even though it says it should take 15 minutes to read, it often took me 30. I am actually planning on reading the Quran next year! That is mercifully a lot shorter! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Leniverse That‘s a great goal! 5y
Graywacke @Leniverse @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - thanks both. !! App sounds appealing. 5y
paulfrankspencer @Leniverse Kudos to finishing. What was the motivation to read it? Just to read it? Also, don't get too excited about the Qur'an. I've read the Bible multiple times (rarely straight through) but I find it much more bearable than the Qur'an, which I've struggled through twice. 5y
Leniverse @paulfrankspencer Thanks. I just figure that highly influential religious texts should be read, and I was curious about the King James version of the Bible. I guess you could say it was on my literary bucket list. 5y
paulfrankspencer @Leniverse that's good motivation. Can't say I've read the KJV all the way through, but I've read a number of other big texts from various religions. Very interesting to see how they compare. I find the Bible extremely unique in its form and content, especially considering it was written by various authors over centuries and how it remains cohesive, contributing to the same narrative arc. Hard to see that though since it takes so long to read... 5y
Leniverse @paulfrankspencer That makes sense. The “editing committee” would have had that narrative arc in mind when they selected the various parts and put them in order. 5y
paulfrankspencer @Leniverse Fair enough. As readers we should all be accustomed to asking who, what, when, where, and why concerning the text, authors, translators, and editors. The importance increases dramatically when discussing religious texts. It is vital to consider the form, content, and context, and I believe that the Bible is unique compared to the Gita, Qur'an, Book of Mormon, etc. It all affects the legitimacy, veracity, and meaning of the text at hand. 5y

I have reached the New Testament! *trumpet fanfare*
Aaand they‘re launching right back into the begetting.
So... who begat Mary? You‘d think that would be of more interest than who begat Christ‘s stepfather. 🤷🏻‍♀️

CouronneDhiver 😂😂 Funny how that works. 6y
Izai.Amorim And that's me 1:6, Izai in the New Testament is called Jesse, the only name with 2 different translations. The original Hebrew Ishai is closer to Izai than to Jesse. 6y
Leniverse @Izai.Amorim Cool! I do wonder about the English NT names. They look so wrong after the Old Testament names! I'm also used to John being Johannes for instance. And Mary should be Maria! I think I need to look up the Hebrew names for the main characters! 6y

I have reached the Tarantino part of the Bible. A bit disappointed to find that the Pulp Fiction quote was a mishmash of several themes and not a verbatim quote. It‘s very much in the spirit, however.

I badly want Samuel L. Jackson to read all of Ezekiel to me. I also want him to read the scary warning speech from Deuteronomy. The one about starving people eating their own children.

Zelma Possible that another translation is closer to his quote? 6y
Leniverse @Zelma No, the full quote is about being your brother‘s keeper etc. Bits and pieces picked from here and there in the Bible, altered and cobbled together. The only really identifiable part is the end of the passage which is very similar to Ezekiel 25:17. 6y
sprainedbrain I can‘t stop laughing at ‘Tarantino part of the Bible.‘ 😂 6y

Quirkybookworm Wha what? Did you say Tarantino part of the the Bible?! I had to reread that to make sure I read correctly!🤣😂🤣 6y
Leniverse @Quirkybookworm @sprainedbrain I considered writing "Pulp Fiction part of the Bible" but figured that might be misunderstood. ? I considered "Samuel L Jackson part" too, but since it turned out Tarantino completely rewrote the Bible quote it seemed more appropriate. ? 6y

Different beauty standards. 😂 I especially like the hair. It sounds wild and somewhat sudden.

saresmoore I‘ve never understood the flock of goats hair! Goats are aggressive and coarse and noisy... 6y
Leniverse @saresmoore I‘m picturing shaggy curls, perched on the head like goats clinging improbably to a sheer mountainside. 6y
saresmoore I like your imagery much better. 😄 6y

W00t! Halfway mark! HALF WAY! Selah.
I must admit to be suffering a bit from Bible fatigue. 🙈 (Is that a thing?) I'm looking forward to reaching the NT 78 issues from now. 😆
Littens who (habitually) read the Bible, any favourite OT books for me to look forward to? I'm currently in Psalms.

LauraBeth I like Nehemiah 6y
Leniverse @LauraBeth Yeah, he was alright. Rebuilding and community. (But also the casting out of all foreign wives and their children 😐) But I've already read that one. 😂 6y

But you know you must have brought it on yourself! Just hang your head in shame and repent already. You know you MUST be evil, deep down inside, or this wouldn't have happened!" 6y
saresmoore They are the worst! And they sound like much of the church leadership in the U.S. these days... 😬 6y

The Bible is way too full of this kind of information! I want the abridged version! 😆 I just finished Chronicles, which are almost entirely superfluous, and now here comes Ezra with more lists of names! 😖

Rachbb3 Gotta muscle through those lineages! 😂👍🏼 6y
CouronneDhiver You‘ve got this! 💪🏽 6y
CocoReads There‘s a lot of info dumps in the OT. Some are important later on... 6y
See All 10 Comments
Caterina I enjoyed reading the OT as an audiobook, particularly for passages like this. It forced me to pay attention to every name, but at the same time I was happily stitching away! Plus the narrator pronounces everything confidently and probably correctly! 6y
Leniverse @Rachbb3 @CouronneDhiver @CocoReads @Caterina Thanks guys. I'd loose my mind if I had to actually memorize any part of this. 😂 I'm just scanning the text until something other than pure lineage happens. Audio might have been a better idea, but with Serial Reader at least I have my bite sized chunk of names per day and that's it until tomorrow. 😅 6y
quietlycuriouskate Just so you know, if you ever take it upon yourself to write a commentary on the OT I will want a signed copy. 6y
Leniverse @River_Voice 😂 I think that undertaking would break me. But I do have brief comments/summaries in my Goodreads updates. 6y
LShelby IIRC, there‘s the parody of a gospel song in the musical Finian‘s Rainbow, in which we are informed that the Bible is really all about the ‘begats‘. 😉 6y
Leniverse @LShelby I think "begat" must certainly be one of the most frequent words! 6y
Leniverse @River_Voice Although... You're giving me ideas now... "My Year of Reading the Bible - a handy guide for other atheists who wonder what all the fuss is about" ? 6y

I get it, they were all somehow twelve!
1 Chronicles - is there a more redundant book in the Bible? It gives the male line from Adam and down through all the tribes and recaps events from 2 Samuel. The only purpose I can see this book serving is to fool people into thinking the Earth is only a few thousand years old. So now at least I know where that delusion comes from. Somebody actually sat down and added up the generations.

DUDE! Bad idea!
Seriously, people go on and on about Abraham almost having to sacrifice one of his sons, but Jephthah sacrificing his daughter, when have you ever heard of that? (Unless you've read the book of judges.) Even the girl herself only laments that she has to die a virgin!
(Jephthah does rend his clothes and weep and regret his big mouth, I'll give him that.)

Rachbb3 Theme of Judges: Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. 😨 And don't make foolish vows! 6y
Leniverse @Rachbb3 Yes, what did he think would likely come out to greet him, a chicken? *Facepalm* 6y
quietlycuriouskate Jephthah in the Bible, Agamemnon in the Iliad.... I kind of hope Mrs Jephthah gave him the Clytemnestra treatment but she was probably too busy mending his torn clothes. 😬 6y
Leniverse @River_Voice There is no mention of Mrs Jephthah. And the daughter is nameless. But it became a custom that "the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four times a year". 6y

Exodus 21:17
"And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death."

That seems... excessive? Most people wouldn't survive puberty! ? Depends what is involved in a "curse" in this sense, I suppose.

Cinfhen Ha! It's all in context 6y

The King James Bible is a terrible translation! What is going on here? Does Jacob carry a grudge because his firstborn wet the parental bed as a child? Or did he defile it simply by sleeping in it? Or is he upset that Reuben slept with/raped one of his father's handmaid-slave-concubines?

Libby1 @Leniverse - the KJV has some beautiful language at times but it is definitely not my favourite translation. 6y
