Death in a Strange Country
Death in a Strange Country | Donna Leon
20 posts | 28 read | 14 to read
Early one morning Commissario Guido Brunetti of the Venice Police confronts a grisly sight when the body of a young man is fished out of a fetid canal. All the clues point to a violent mugging, but for Brunetti the motive of robbery seems altogether too convenient. When something is discovered in the victim s apartment that suggests the existence of a high-level conspiracy, Brunetti becomes convinced that somebody is taking great pains to provide a ready-made solution to the crime. Rich with atmosphere and marvelous plotting, "Death in a Strange Country" is a superb novel in Donna Leon s chilling Venetian mystery series."

A body found floating in a Venetian canal turns out to be an American military doctor. It looks like a mugging gone wrong but Commissario Brunetti is not convinced.

It's rather darker than the previous book, with a despairing ending, nothing having really changed despite four deaths.

Brunetti has another tough case to solve in book two of the long running mystery series. With a dry sense of humor and the Venice backdrop, Brunetti tracks down each clue, leading to conspiracies and corrupt politics, both Italian and American. Not a fast read, but I like feeling like I‘m walking in Venice. #1993 #19822022

Book 2, Commissario Brunetti series. I didn't like the first book in this series, but the series had great success, so I had to give it another chance. (I wanted to get away during the pandemic, and Venice is one of the most interesting places I've ever been, so...) This book was much better than the first. Brunetti is a great character, and Leon really really knows Venice. (I believe she lives/lived there.)

I did not like Leon's first Brunetti novel (which I read about a decade ago), but I was longing for Venice, so I tried the second in the series. I enjoyed it; much better!

It‘s rare that I stay up to finish a book, but I couldn‘t put this one down. As a result, I‘m a zombie today 😂 It was absolutely worth it. A great story, wonderful characters and setting, but also a commentary on an important environmental issue. Thanks @Crazeedi for suggesting I read them in order.

Because there are lots of food descriptions, a picture from the breakfast buffet at the Italian hotel where we stayed. Hotel pic

Crazeedi Oh that's awesome! I love the descriptions of the food in all the books, so glad you're loving them as much as me, I couldn't put them dow either. I love that some don't necessarily end *happily ever after*. And I love Brunetti's love of *old Venice* 5y

It seems I always need to have a book going on my Kindle, no matter how many physical books are in progress. Thanks to @Crazeedi I am now hooked on this series, so about to begin this one.

Crazeedi Oh I am so jealous that you get to read these for the first time! 😉 They are soooo good, enjoy, sorry, not sorry, you're hooked!! 5y

Mehso-so

I wanted to love this. I read it while I was in Italy last week, to really sink myself into the feeling of being there. I loved the first book in the series. This one was a bit meh, with a somewhat lackluster mystery and a disappointing denouement. I‘ll probably still try the next in the series at some point.

KateFulfordAuthor If you need another recommendation, may I point you to my People‘s Book Prize nominated debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 6y

I just finished this second book in the Commissario Brunetti series. While I did not enjoy this quite as much as the first book in the series, I could appreciate the evolution of the main characters‘ lives and of course the vicarious peek at life in Venice. I can see the series taking a darker turn and look forward to reading more of them. This is my letter D book for #LitsyAtoZ. #D

Really enjoyed this book, I can't decide if I liked it more or less than the first - but I'm definitely continuing with this series. So far the plots have been difficult to predict, the surroundings gorgeous, and some humor and lightness in between to break things up. His boss is hilarious.

Picked book up for $2 at used bookstore. My 2nd in the series/ this one darker, with Brunetti seeking justice, his belief in justice, creating tension. Cities full of corruption. Social/global issue of problem of how to handle toxic waste at heart of story. A wonderful character, old Sicilian woman avenges her son death- satisfaction in that! At times Disturbing, highly recommend.

SaraBeagle Hey, hey! I recognize that bookstore!! 7y

If you want to read a book where everything is resolved beautifully, do NOT read this book. If you want to read about an Italian police officer struggle for justice, read this book.
