Charles de Lint is the author I most associate with “urban fantasy“, though the term has evolved since he published his first books. This collection of stories from his Newford series delves into the lives of city dwellers, including the artists, the homeless, and the marginalized. I love de Lint's beautiful writing and the mix of fantasy, folklore and horror.

Another unexpected 5 ⭐ for a dystopian book! Thanks for sending me this book @TheAromaofBooks ! Stacking the next one (and won't put it off for so long).

Cinfhen This is a very popular novel! It‘s taught in almost EVERY middle school/ high school in the US. (edited) 1y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen It's not taught at all in the UK! 1y
BarbaraBB I don‘t know it either, Jennifer! But 5 stars for a dystopian read is amazing 🤣 1y

AshleyHoss820 This is one of my favorites! So poignant! ☺️ 1y
Librarybelle I did like this one! A modern classic! 1y
TheAromaofBooks This book is so thought-provoking!! I did not enjoy the other books in the series as well as I felt they lacked the creepy “this could be your future“ vibe that this book exudes so well. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts when you get to them!! 1y
Bluebird @Cinfhen it wasn‘t taught in mine! Lol. I never heard if the book until a few years ago. Great review! Stacked! 1y
Cinfhen Did you grow up in the US @Bluebird ? I feel like it was a staple during the 90‘s and aughts when my kiddos were in school and actually my son was taught the Giver in Israel as part of his English for English speakers class in 9th grade. 1y
Bluebird @Cinfhen yes, California. I just looked up the book and see it was written in 1993. That explains it, it was written well past my school days 😂 1y
Cinfhen Ha! That‘s the answer @Bluebird 1y

When a good looking middle-aged vet opens a vet practice in Carsley, every woman of a certain age desires to become the next Mrs…Agatha being one of them. But, murder happens, and Agatha has to figure out what happened. Rereading this series reminds me how much I am not a fan of James Lacey. 🤷🏻‍♀️

A Tuscan Childhood | Kinta Beevor

Pickpick

Firstly, the blurb on this book feels a little misleading. D. H. Lawrence and other writers and painters are hardly a part of this story.

Secondly, this feels like a love letter to the employees her family had and their farmers. To the Italian food. The way they make olive oil and wine.

Kinta came to live in her parents castle when she was 5 and it was after WWI. And we follow what happens over the next couple of decades well into the 50s.

AnneCecilie This was also a reminder that I need the books by her son, Anthony Beevor, that I have standing on my shelves. #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks #1993 #192025 @Librarybelle 6th book for #JoyousJanuary @Andrew65 2y

Brunetti has another tough case to solve in book two of the long running mystery series. With a dry sense of humor and the Venice backdrop, Brunetti tracks down each clue, leading to conspiracies and corrupt politics, both Italian and American. Not a fast read, but I like feeling like I‘m walking in Venice. #1993 #19822022

Soubhiville I‘ve never heard of this one. I‘m sorry you didn‘t care for it. 3y
Simona @Soubhiville I have huge respect for her and her work, but I can‘t see any bigger importance in this book … 3y

I feel mixed on this one, the last seventy pages were deeply affecting and I found myself in tears and the depiction of life for black men in Louisiana in the 1940s was powerful, but parts of it also dragged. Jefferson is sentenced to die for a crime to which he was a bystander and his aunt enlists the local teacher to meet with him and impart his humanity on him so he can die with dignity. #40thbirthdaychallenge #1993

Jess861 I felt the same way about this book - it was a challenge to get through at times but an important story to tell. 5y

Grisham is always good for a page-turner. Darby Shaw, a Tulane law student, teams up with a Washington post reporter to get to the bottom of 2 assassinations. Lots of intrigue, spying, and chases. Perfect winter break read. #40thbdaychallenge #1993.

First I was disappointed that the ebook loan link couldn‘t be fixed, then I was, wait I have a copy on my pc all this time? I purchased a Humble Bundle Women of Sci Fi and Fantasy collection one year ago, and ultimately forgot about it. Celebrating the moment with a palm planted onto face. 🤦🏻‍♀️
