IM LOST. IM SCARED. AND THERES SOMETHING HORRIBLE IN HERE. My name is Gary Rendell. Im an astronaut. When they asked me as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said, astronaut, please! I dreamed astronaut, I worked astronaut, I studied astronaut. I got lucky; when a probe exploring the Oort Cloud found a strange alien rock and an international team of scientists was put together to go and look at it, I made the draw. I got even luckier. When disaster hit and our team was split up, scattered through the endless cold tunnels, I somehow survived. Now Im lost, and alone, and scared, and theres something horrible in here. Lucky me. Lucky, lucky, lucky. A new standalone novella by the Arthur C Clarke Award-winning author of Children of Time.

🎧 I had to listen twice. It was that weird & good! And SHORT!

So an alien exploratory mission goes horrible wrong. A lone survivor wonders an extensive labyrinth going slowly insane?

The author narrates. Good job. The book is on my Amazon Book wishlist now!

This was strange. Very strange. A quick moving novella where not a whole lot is explained but something about the weirdness of it all kept me turning pages. I feel pretty meh about it overall. Didn‘t love it and didn‘t hate it. If you‘re into weird fiction/sci-fi I would give this a shot. Planning to try this author‘s other works as well though perhaps this wasn‘t the best intro to him.

The parts are familiar: Smart Ass Astronaut Survivor (ala The Martian), Strange Object at the Edge of Space (see the Rama books & like half of all scifi), Physics Breaking Labyrinth Connecting Distant Worlds (what‘s up, Hyperion Cantos).

But this darkly comic & grisly novella was so wild that I didn‘t care. Even though the ending was more “Oh, okay” than “Whoa!” I had a very good time.

Get the ebook and treat yourself to a weird afternoon.

A surprising blend of Sci-fi, Horror and dark British humor. I would like to thank #Netgalley and Rebellion Publishing for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVED this! Adrian Tchaikovsky writes great novellas, and packs so much in to them. Gary Rendell is separated from his fellow shipmates when they try to start an expedition to explore a planet sized rock near Pluto. But it‘s a lot more than just a rock. It‘s a great story of a man losing his grip on reality - the descent into insanity. And there‘s a bit of a play on words with regards to his name - which becomes clear near the end!

A great short story but I think I would have preferred it if it was a little longer, so the -see spoiler in the comment-. Though I have 7 of the Shadows of the Apt books on my shelf, this is the first Tchaikovsky book I read. I really should start that intimidating series...

tessavi so the main character going insane happened a bit more gradually. 5y
