Today's #womenshistoryreads pick is this novel based on the true story of Mary Bowser, a free black woman who went undercover as a slave in Jefferson Davis's house to spy for the Union during the #civilwar. AND - get this - she had an eidetic memory. Handy! Love that she was real, and love the version of her Leveen creates in these pages. #historicalfiction #histfic #hiddenfigures #herstory #womenwriters

Pickpick

Have 2 #diversereads #spynovels. Both are great.

The Secrets of Mary Bowser, based on the true story of a freed slave who returns to the South during the Civil War as a Union spy.
A Spy in the House, the first in a YA historical series featuring a biracial protagonist. Hey, did you know there was an established Chinese community in Victorian England? Neither did I.

I love historical fiction. Mary Bowser was a freed slave who was a Union spy during the Civil War. She's a fascinating person but it took a while for the book to get interesting.
