Ugh, after reading Citizen I immediately bought this because I knew her voice was unique. Rankine blends essay, image and poetry to create textual collages that pack so so much. In this book, written during the years following 9/11, she takes on the deconstruction of America through pharmaceutical companies, terrorism, how we relate to the other and when do we abuse of those relations, consumerism and TV. Visually stunning and superb content.
Great book, I love the style and on page presentation super quick to read and tackles mortality in a very human manner.
"Define loneliness? // Yes. // It's what we can't do for each other."
I usually keep my quotes short, but this entire page (p.81) from Rankine's 'Don't Let Me Be Lonely' is beautiful.
Though I must say that so far, the book just hasn't managed to really reel me in.
starting this one today 📖
this is the UK rerelease (originally published in 2004), but I had some Kobo Super Points saved up so I was able to switch locations & use them to get this few months ago
Nighttime reading with this strange, wonderful work of art. Highly recommend.
This book is beautiful! I'm about halfway through and I don't want it to end. Claudia Rankine is wonderful and I now want to go out and buy all her books! Citizen is also a fantastic book and a very important read, but I hope Rankine's previous books start to get more attention as well!
Incredible, educational, will stay with me for years, I'm sure.
