I so loved this book! The timeframe is 1893-1932 and tells the story of an Finnish family making a new life in the Pacific Northwest. I learned about logging, fishing and the politics of that time told through this family‘s trials and victories. It‘s over 700 hundred pages and I loved every minute. Time well spent!

Picked this up this weekend while visiting my sister in Arizona. Not sure why I thought it would be a good idea to cart a 700+ page book through the airport tomorrow on the way home, but at least I‘ll have good reading for the whole flight. 🤣 Thinking this one will be a pick judging it so far.

We have lived in the Pacific Northwest for a little over 2 years. Logging and fishing, which feature in this book, have employed people here for generations. Both are very dangerous. The Scandinavian immigrants to the area knew the dangers.

I liked this book, but I struggled to like the MC. I admire her pursuit of justice, but her choices hurt her family.

I‘m really enjoying this book and the conversation my book group is having about it. I imagine this quote will spark some good talk next week.

I climbed into this marvelous novel, and pulled it in after me, reading every word from the 721 pages. I mourned the end because the characters had become my family.

A tale of Finns leaving the old country for the new. An account of early 20th century logging, and later fishing in Western Washington. A labor history, with the most remarkable woman at its core. A family history told with love.

Spent a pleasant hour this afternoon listening to Karl Marlantes read from his latest book, “Deep River.” He was an excellent speaker! And then of course I bought a copy.

Going against the grain with this one, but I just couldn‘t finish it. Good enough story, but it‘s very slow and incredibly long. And, 42% into the book, I just don‘t find myself invested enough to continue. #netgalley

The problem you face when you really love to read and this book sounds sooo interesting, but it is EIGHT HUNDRED PAGES. I teetered on the request button and being the insane person I am I hit request. No idea how I‘m going to fit this in hahahahaha. The obsession is real!

I feel like I've just had a (highly enjoyable) crash history course on Finland, socialism vs capitalism, northwest America, labor unions, and more. The history lessons are rich, but the plot was not compromised for historical accuracy in any way. This is a quote-rich tale full of points that beg for deep discussion, whether in a book club or across the dinner table or up on Capitol Hill. Enthusiastically recommended!

I'm not the biggest fan of historical fiction, so I wasn't expecting to enjoy this 700+ page family epic as much as I did. Aino is the ultimate feminist heroine, and I learned so much about the labor movement, an essential part of American history. It was empowering to read about early 20th century left-wing organizing, and I found myself continuously cheering on Aino's impassioned arguments against capitalism.

Weekend plans! I‘ve built my book nest and stocked up on drinks. I‘m ready for a reading weekend! What are you reading this weekend? I‘m reading HERESY, then NEVER-CONTENTED THINGS. And the new Nell Zink, as well as THE UNLIKELY ADVENTURES OF THE SHERGILL SISTERS. And I really want to read THE CONFESSIONS OF FRANNIE LANGTON. But I also have the new Kate Zambreno, and the new Karl Marlantes, so this reading is subject to change without notice. 😂📚
