Matterhorn
Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War | Karl Marlantes
57 posts | 36 read | 70 to read
Intense, powerful, and compelling, Matterhorn is an epic war novel in the tradition of Norman Mailers The Naked and the Dead and James Joness The Thin Red Line. It is the timeless story of a young Marine lieutenant, Waino Mellas, and his comrades in Bravo Company, who are dropped into the mountain jungle of Vietnam as boys and forced to fight their way into manhood. Standing in their way are not merely the North Vietnamese but also monsoon rain and mud, leeches and tigers, disease and malnutrition. Almost as daunting, it turns out, are the obstacles they discover between each other: racial tension, competing ambitions, and duplicitous superior officers. But when the company finds itself surrounded and outnumbered by a massive enemy regiment, the Marines are thrust into the raw and all-consuming terror of combat. The experience will change them forever. Written by a highly decorated Marine veteran over the course of thirty years, Matterhorn is a spellbinding and unforgettable novel that brings to life an entire worldboth its horrors and its thrillsand seems destined to become a classic of combat literature.

A marine gets a leech stuck in his urethra in the opening pages of this epic novel of the Vietnam War. It only gets worse after that. The plot: two months in the life of an infantry company as its members try to survive jungle fighting, political idiocy, and racial tension. The book avoids caricatures as it illuminates the blood, despair, suffering, and courage. The storytelling feels effortless, approachable. The author was there, and it shows.

The nights are starting to get longer. Here in Alabama our time falls back this weekend. And longer nights mean more time to read. So here are a few long books for long autumn nights.

There‘s nothing more satisfying than the work of finally finishing a long book. It really is like living a lifetime between pages.

Finished this one as an audiobook, on the boat with my husband on an unusually perfect warm fall day. Long book that could have used some heavy editing especially in the middle. But the characters were well portrayed, the battle scenes were accurate although pretty graphic along with language you‘d expect from embattled marines. My husband was disappointed with the ending but I found it to be a satisfying ending & a complex story overall.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Congratulations on your milestone, @Chrissyreadit ! My favorite fiction read of 2019 was “Matterhorn” by Karl Marlantes. I don‘t really plan my books ahead of time because I‘m a mood reader, but I do know that I will be starting “Chesapeake” on Jan. 1 as my #chunksterchallenge2020.

The story of a Marine regiment fighting on and around a hill in Vietnam, Matterhorn. It is not a novel that glorifies war. In fact, it is full of the futility, desperation, fear and frustration that can only be described by someone who experienced it first hand.

Three books are missing (a GR win in the post, and two still in the few boxes I have yet to unpack), and At Swim, Two Boys is an optional for my #PassportLitsy.

Looking at it this way, I'm thinking a bit ambitious for 2018. Although, there's enough of a mix of genres that I may be okay. #MountTBR #MountTBR2018

Watching the Vietnam War documentary is very emotional and recalls to mind this vicious and terrible story that so effectively told the Vietnam story from the eyes of the soldiers. It is wonderful that KM and Tim O'Brien are being interviewed and tonight O'Brien was left without words.

drokka My sis-in-law asked me if I was watching it, but I don't have a lot of Vietnam knowledge and told her that I wanted to wait and see once I'd read Matterhorn. I'm recording the show, but think I missed an episode or two. Hopefully it wi repeat before I've read the book (edited) 7y
Texreader @drokka I was like you but have read this book-wow it's powerful-and now watching the documentary. I feel like I was so unaware even though I was born in 1968 and therefore lived through half this war! My brain is in overload mode. Take it all slowly is all I can say. There are some nights I'm just in tears or numb. 7y
drokka Thanks for the warning. I've heard that both the Matterhorn and Burns's documentary are enlightening. I was born the year after you and know what I've seen in some films, but understand that a lot of that was fictionalized for entertainment. I'm looking forward to learning. 7y

Anyone else getting into the new Ken Burns' documentary "The Vietnam War"? An inexplicably bad internet connection has prevented me from watching the last 2 nights, but finally catching up on Ep. 1 & 2 tonight. Karl Marlantes and Tim O'Brien are both featured as talking heads. Matterhorn is staggering, and The Things They Carried will remain one of my favorite books of all time. Essential readings on the American war experience in Vietnam.

bookishkai I watched the first two nights but not tonight. I was also pleased to see Neil Sheehan as a talking head; he and David Halberstam were some of the first reporters on the ground in the early '60's. 7y
Texreader I watched ep 1 but initially thought it was a weekly series rather than a daily one so I missed ep 2. I was teaching tonight and missed ep 3. I noticed the two authors in ep 1, and found it interesting that Ken Burns said he didn't talk to anyone famous, just everyday people. I guess those two are not "famous." I've read Matterhorn (yes-wow) and I have Things on my tbr stack. 7y

Saknicole Omg I heard that it was coming. I need that I'm my life ASAP!! I can't believe I forgot! How have you been watching? 7y
Kimberlone @Texreader I read something of Burns saying he wanted to avoid interviewing people who have some sort of reputation or legacy to protect (explaining why they show clips of McCain, Kerry, and Fonda, but don't interview them). Tim O'Brien may be famous as an author but nowhere to the level that a John McCain is to the public. Interested to see how the series deals with those figures, though. 7y
Kimberlone @bookishkris I wasn't familiar with those reporters before but definitely impressed with their addition to the story of the war so far 7y

Besides the novel's stark and realistic prose, its publishing journey is amazing. It took Marlantes, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran, 30 years to write and publish this epic. Highly autobiographical, Marlantes himself has suffered from severe PTSD since returning home. Our veterans' sacrifices must not remain invisible to us. This book will rightly haunt all that read it. #aprilbookshowers #thoughtprovoking

the_hibernator Is the language and content of this book too advanced for a 13yo? My guess is yes, but I'm struggling to find a book for my nephew. He loves the marines. There are few books available for teenagers on the subject, and as far as I can tell, most glorify war. I'd rather he appreciated the horror of war like a good little budding liberal should. Though maybe that makes me a party pooper. 7y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @the_hibernator I would say yes. A lot of f words and pretty gory. You're not a party pooper at all. You can view an excerpt on Amazon using the "Look Inside" feature, if you're curious. 7y

I've read lots of fiction and nonfiction about WWII, some about the war in Iraq, and I want to read more about the Vietnam War. I read The Things They Carried by O'Brien so long ago that I don't remember it. I've heard nothing but praise for Matterhorn.

Texreader I liked it. Tough to read but that's the way it goes with war novels. 7y
mrsthilkey @BarbaraTheBibliophage The Sympathizer is on my tbr list! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage It's not an easy read - but like you said, war topics never are. 7y

Victory in combat is like sex with a prostitute. For a moment you forget everything in the sudden physical rush, but then you have to pay your money to the woman showing you the door. You see the dirt on the walls and your sorry image in the mirror.

Suet624 That was quite the book. 7y

'Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War' (by Karl Marlantes; narrated by Bronson Pinchot) A novel about USMC Bravo Company during 9 months of the Vietnam War in '69. There's a Chain of Command list at the beginning that you should take the time to absorb before Marlantes effectively lands you in the bush! Pinchot channels the characters so perfectly that he himself disappears (BTW Don't expect "Balki" to appear!) #audiobookpantheon #recommendsday

ValerieAndBooks Bronson Pinchot has to live down Balki for the rest of his life, doesn't he?! 8y
Dogearedcopy @ValerieAndBooks I know! And it was *decades ago*! 8y

#setinAsia I have a number of books on my TBR set in Asia (growing with every post today ☺️), but this is the only one I physically own. This was a recommendation on All The Books back in November as a back-list bump. I hope to tackle it soon.

shawnmooney I remember Liberty's backlist bump recommend of this one so well I can remember exactly where I was on the walk home and which side of the street I was on when I heard it, which is weird. Lol. 8y
Bookzombie @shawnmooney Your memory is much better than mine! 8y

#somethingforsept #booksetinasia I have not read this one yet. Picked it up on a road-trip at McKay's in Nashville.

DGRachel It was incredible. I never want to read it again, but I made everyone I know read it. Powerful, gut-wrenching, disturbing, and worth every minute spent reading it. 8y
LisaJo Thanks @DGRachel - moving it up the TBR LIST. 8y

"These are the men that are fighting….not some politician behind a desk…or a faceless entity. These men are brothers, sons, husbands, fathers and friends. MrBook Nice! (I absolutely *love* your Muses concept by the way. I see you going places with this! 😎👍🏻🙌🏻👌🏻) 8y

I didn't think I'd find a novel about war so intriguing but this one did it. A difficult story masterfully told.

Sydsavvy Ooh I loved this one! 8y
BB1958 Masterfully told indeed. The author was a Marine officer and a Rhodes scholar- both evident from this excellent novel. The horrors of war are writ large here. 7y
