I‘ve been seeing mixed reviews, but I really loved this book. Dark, dreamy and compulsively readable.

Full review is on my blog: https://sprainedbrain.blog/2020/04/30/a-short-and-sweet-review-creatures-by-cris...

Mehso-so

Growing up on Winter Island off the coast of California, Evie‘s life was a mix of loving the sea, the beaches and ocean life, and the struggle of irresponsible and neglectful parents.

The writing style was a bit more stream of consciousness than I prefer, and honestly I think I may have enjoyed the story a bit more in a time that‘s less depressing than now.

Overall I‘d say between so-so and pick. But seriously huge #covercrush.

Mitch Agreed on #covercrush! 4y
AmyG I love the cover, too. I also really liked this book. 4y

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen

I‘m hoping to settle back into calmer reading this week. I‘m done working for at least the next two weeks, as my boss suggested I go ahead and take the vacation time I was supposed to be in UK for #LitsyReadingRetreat.

Current reads are bookclub, leant to me by @Eyelit , and audio gift from @Hooked_on_books .

No plan at all for what‘s up next, but I‘ll probably try to keep it light. 🤷

Hooked_on_books Your critters will be thrilled to have you home so much! 4y

...and that sometimes, loneliness can make a heart stop.

This book is so beautiful and melancholy and raw and atmospheric, I have a feeling I‘m going to be up way too late reading, once again.

The author layers up this story very quietly... it jumps across time and space to create an atmospheric portrait of Evie and the island on which she grows up. It's a sad story - but beautifully told. I grew up on an island - and really felt the pull of the sea and the sense of difference of being an islander. Thanks so much @amyg for leading me to this. xx

AmyG I loved this book. A story of love, loss, abandonment.....all the feels in this one. I was happy to pass it on to you. 😘 4y
Mitch @AmyG agreed. It was warm and raw and sensitive all at once. Loved the whales and the connections to nature too x 4y
AmyG Yes, I loved the commections to nature. Her writing gave me such a clear picture of the island where she lived. I look forward to her future books. 4y

I liked this book a lot. It was so atmospheric. She captured island life so well that the island feels like one of the characters. It‘s a coming-of-age story that jumps around in time and packs a serious emotional punch.

HeathHof That cover! 🤩🤩🤩 4y
PNWBookseller85 @Mynameisacolour right?!?! It‘s stunning. 4y

5/5🌟So beautiful, heartbreaking and atmospheric. It's the eve of her wedding, Evangeline's groom may be lost at sea, her mostly absent mother shows up out of nowhere and a dead whale is trapped on the harbour. We seamlessly flow back and forth from her past to her present, the sentiments of her hard childhood lingering on. Themes of abandonment, betrayal, forgiveness, grief and love. And how our past will haunt our future if we let it. #booklover

It‘s #FriYay and I‘m doing what I usually do when I‘m home on a winter night. Hiding under layers of blankets, resist looking out the window at the snowfall, avoiding work texts (sorry I‘m not the weekend on call person). Oh and of course reading or audiobooking until I can no longer stay awake.

As someone who grew up on an island, and by the sea, these opening quotes have already pulled me in. Looking forward to diving into this book...
