When a house near Lee and Joe's home goes up for sale, the couple teams up with Lee's aunt and uncle, Nettie and Hogan, to buy it, remodel it, and resell it for a sweet profit. But after the owners of the house, the Baileys, accept their offer, a local developer, Richard 'Spud' Dirk, suddenly swoops in with a higher one, and it seems their dreamsmight be snatched away. But when a long-hidden gun is found behind a pipe in the Baileys' basement, she begins to suspect a mystery is afoot. In honor of #sharkweek, I‘m posting the only shark book I actually own. I am not yet sure what kind of shenanigans a chocolate shark can get into, as I‘m saving it this for when I need a palate cleanser. It looks like a cute story. Aside from this and Jaws, I am completely oblivious about fictional shark books. Do you have any good shark story recommendations?

vlwelser My niece is obsessed with sharks. This one made us both laugh. 4y
ravenlee Haven‘t read or seen it, but wasn‘t The Meg about a shark? 4y
abookishbutterfly @ravenlee I just looked it up. Yes, it is. Looks like there is a whole series. I‘d heard of the movie but hadn‘t realized there were books, too. 4y
abookishbutterfly @vlwelser That looks cute! 4y

Dollycas‘s Thoughts

As a confirmed chocoholic, I have been all-in on this series from the very beginning. Lee and Nettie are two of my favorite cozy characters and I am thrilled their stories are continuing. I love the relationship they have with the men in their lives.

I find cozy mysteries fascinating! I can‘t handle really scary, suspenseful mysteries, so cozy is right up my alley. I LOVE the humor - the puns are real, my friends! 😂 My friends are getting used to me halting all conversation to read a new cozy title out loud and then I laugh and laugh and laugh! Such fun!

The Chocolate Shark Shenanigans is the first cozy mystery I‘ve read and I‘m pleased to say it went well. [Review continues in comments]

What I like:

A quick read
Kept me engaged
Chocolate history and trivia peppered throughout
5y
booksbrewsandbooze Things I struggled with:

Characters doing stupid stuff, especially when it came to police investigations (I‘m pretty sure this comes with the territory of cozy mysteries though - the amateur sleuth!

Lots of names/characters: I have the memory span of a goldfish, so I admit that I had to go back a few times to try and remember who someone was or to keep names/relationships straight

The villain: Scarily one dimensional and not sure how someone that evil would fit into society without people being more wary of them

Overall: I‘d absolutely read more books by author JoAnna Carl. The Chocolate Shark Shenanigans ticks many of the boxes when it comes to cozy mysteries. I would have liked to hear more about the chocolate shop business. There was so much going on in the book that it sometimes felt like that job was an aside.

The cover is so fun. Great colors and illustrations - campy and cute.

I didn‘t solve the mystery ahead of time, which kept the action going and there were twists and turns that held my interest all throughout. Now if you‘ll excuse me, I‘m off to buy chocolate dusted with sea salt!

Note: My friend received this as an ARC and was kind enough to let me read it. Thank you!

One of the greatest joys in life is the cozy mystery genre! I think it‘s hilarious that genres exist like “cozy bookshop mysteries,” “cozy tea shop mysteries,” “cozy B&B mysteries,” and now, “cozy chocolate mysteries!” 😂 Whenever I come across a new one, I run across the house and read the title to my roommate, with unabashed glee! #thechocolatesharkshenanigans #joannacarl #cozymysteries #booksbrewsandbooze

Fun fact: Ferrets are sometimes referred to as “carpet sharks.” So it makes sense that one of my carpet sharks would steal a Hershey Kiss while I was trying to take this photo! She walked over, picked it up with her mouth, ran away. So rude!

I wasn‘t familiar with this series until I stumbled upon this book. I hear the books can be read as standalones so I think I‘ll be fine starting here. Have you read any of the other books from the series?

I liked how well Lee and her husband worked together. It was clear that there was tension with the discovery of the gun and the body but the story still stayed light, humorous, and had its fair share of shenanigans. It was a pleasant read but it didn‘t grab my interest as much as I was hoping it would. Although, I liked how though the murder was present-day the roots for everything taking place was deeply planted in the 1950‘s.
