Last Exit to Brooklyn
Last Exit to Brooklyn | Hubert Selby Jr.
Few novels have caused as much controversy as Hubert Selby Jr.'s notorious masterpiece. Described by various reviewers as hellish and obscene, it tells the stories of New Yorkers who at every turn confront the worst excesses in human nature. Yet there are moments of exquisite tenderness in these troubled lives. Georgette, the transvestite who falls in love with a callous hoodlum; Tralala, the conniving prostitute who plumbs the depths of sexual degradation; and Harry, the strike leader who hides his true desires behind a boorish masculinity, are unforgettable creations. Last Exit to Brooklyn was banned by British courts in 1967, a decision that was reversed the following year with the help of a number of writers including Anthony Burgess.

This is a raw and brutal story. I‘m not sure if I‘ll get through all of it, but I‘m going to give it a try. I picked it up from a local #LittleFreeLibrary.

EvieBee Yes! I read a synopsis about it after listening to a podcast episode about it. Pretty gritty. Hard to believe it was written in the 50s. 3y
vivastory I read this one last year. It's difficult but definitely a favorite. 3y
vivastory @EvieBee Was it Backlisted? 3y

SqueakyChu @EvieBee It‘s starting to grow on me. I read it quickly at first, but now I just restarted it to get more acquainted with the characters. I thought originally I‘d just toss it at some point, but I‘m finding it good so far despite the subject. (edited) 3y
SqueakyChu @vivastory I plan to work my way through this story. It‘s definitely keeping my interest. 3y
SqueakyChu @vivastory I don‘t know if it was backlisted as I‘m not really sure what that means. My copy is a trade paperback which looks fairly new with a list price of $13 and copyright dates of 1957, 1960, 1961, and 1964 (my preteen and teen years). 3y
SqueakyChu What a tough ride! I‘m glad I chose to read this book despite its raw subjects. My favorite story was “Strike”—about Harry Black, a man with a new sense of power and his exploits during a prolonged strike. 3y

“Sometimes we have the absolute certainty there's something inside us that's so hideous and monstrous that if we ever search it out we won't be able to stand looking at it. But it's when we're willing to come face to face with that demon that we face the angel.“

Remembering Hubert Selby Jr. on his birthday.

When I was 13 there was no such thing as YA and I basically just used to ‘loan‘ books from anyone in the house! I pinched this from my brother - and I admit that 13 was probably way too young to read it!

Cinfhen Have not read but I HAVE previously stacked 😉 6y
Reggie We‘re you scandalized or were you already “Siouxsie and the Banshees” Trish a la Spellbound? 6y
Balibee146 I remember those days.... You went from Narnia straight to the classics at school 👍😂😂 6y

Cathythoughts I have not heard of this one ... but it seems a memorable one for you 👍🏻 6y
gradcat This was so good! #nostalgia for me...🥰 6y
TrishB @Cinfhen I found it very grim! But I was very young too. 6y
TrishB @Reggie I have to admit to being shocked! I remember thinking ‘OMG people write this!‘ 6y
TrishB @Balibee146 exactly! 6y
TrishB @Cathythoughts a grim read. 6y
TrishB @gradcat I didn‘t enjoy at the time. 6y
gradcat @TrishB I did, but I was probably pretty grim at the time, no kidding 🙂 6y
eraderneely I thought I recognized the author. I was completely screwed up in high school because of 6y
TrishB @eraderneely this sounds very similar! 6y

#harddaysnight #heyjune. Lots of the scurrilous activity in this novel make it a hard days night . An amazing book , but when people read what it‘s about , they make a decision to dive right in or run the other way .Punch the ticket and take the ride...liberated from my storage stash just an hour ago.

Billypar I definitely dove in and did not regret it. It's been so long since I read it and I don't remember all of the plotlines but the atmosphere and feel of the writing style really stuck with me. 6y
Leftcoastzen @Billypar Right with you there! 6y
Cinfhen Haven‘t read this but I‘m totally interested!! It‘s a title I‘m familiar with but somehow never read it. Thanks for the post😛 6y

Liz_M @Billypar Agree. I found Sara's (?) sorry arc particularly troubling/worrisome. 6y
Leftcoastzen @Liz_M maybe the Tralala story line?It was very troubling. When they published it in U.K. , court fights over content. (edited) 6y
Billypar @Liz_M My memory is so poor I had to go back and consult my copy. The two that I remembered pieces of were Tralala and the next one- Strike! I think I was mildly traumatized by the end of Tralala- that was the part that stuck in my head. 6y

The bodies went back in the doors and bars and the heads in the windows. The cops drove away and Freddy and the guys went back into the Greeks and the street was quiet, just the sound of a tug and an occasional car; and even the blood couldn't be seen from a few feet away.

I could not put this book down though it's not for all. A gritty grimy novel using an idiosyncratic style following the exploits of people set in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn. Drugs, prostitution, homosexuality, transvestism, violence, despair, depression, hope just to name a few themes.
