Half an Inch of Water
Half an Inch of Water: Stories | Percival Everett
6 posts | 6 read | 46 to read
A new collection of stories set in the West from "one of the most gifted and versatile of contemporary writers" (NPR) Percival Everett's long-awaited new collection of stories, his first since 2004's Damned If I Do, finds him traversing the West with characteristic restlessness. A deaf Native American girl wanders off into the desert and is found untouched in a den of rattlesnakes. A young boy copes with the death of his sister by angling for an unnaturally large trout in the creek where she drowned. An old woman rides her horse into a mountain snowstorm and sees a long-dead beloved dog. For the plainspoken men and women of these storiesfathers and daughters, sheriffs and veterinarianssmall events trigger sudden shifts in which the ordinary becomes unfamiliar. A harmless comment about how to ride a horse changes the course of a relationship, a snakebite gives rise to hallucinations, and the hunt for a missing man reveals his uncanny resemblance to an actor. Half an Inch of Water tears through the fabric of the everyday to examine what lies beneath the surface of these lives. In the hands of master storyteller Everett, the act of questioning leads to vistas more strange and unsettling than could ever have been expected.

I bought this for my brother for his birthday and I think I will finally see him this weekend (he's been out of town for a while). I'm intrigued but won't open a gift book on principle. I wonder if I should ask to borrow it when he's done. Has anyone read it?

Just taking a moment to point out that Percival Everett had a pet crow named Jim!

The.Intentional.Reader His book "American Desert" is one of my top 10 favorite books I've ever read. Great author! (And he has a crow as a pet!) 7y
lauralovesbooks1 I have Erasure and Assumption in my TBR stack. Recommendation on which to read first? 7y
Yossarian @lauralovesbooks1 I've only read the one book of stories, but the Paris Review interview in the current issue is excellent. 7y

This was such a fantastic book, one of my favorite books so far this year. It is actually a collection of short stories that while not specifically linked (outside a few characters) feel as if they belong together. I haven't read anything by Everett before but now I have a few more books to add to my TBR!📚📚💯

horriblehoggle I loved this one too! 8y

This is the Western for you if you think you aren't the kind of person who likes Westerns. A. Focused on an African-American large-animal vet in Wyoming, with a diverse cast by an AA author; B. Lots of uncanny/ magic realism themes; C. Inter-related short stories, so minimal commitment. Read it!

BookishFeminist Percival Everett is a talented writer. If you haven't read his other work I highly recommend 8y
Yossarian @BookishFeminist All of his books are now on my radar, but I'll move Erasure to the top! 8y
BookishFeminist @Yossarian Knowing that you liked The Sellout & Blackass I think you'll really enjoy- it's a satire on Blackness. 8y
