The Poison Garden
The Poison Garden: A Novel | Alex Marwood
11 posts | 8 read | 21 to read
A new novel of insidious secrets and chilling revelations surrounding a mysterious cult--the latest gripping psychological thriller from Alex Marwood When nearly one hundred members of The Ark, a sinister apocalypse cult are found dead by poison at their isolated community in North Wales, those left alive are scattered to the winds with few coping skills and fewer answers. For twenty-three-year-old Romy, who has never known life outside the compound, learning how to live in a world she has been taught to fear is terrifying. Now Romy must start a new life for herself--and the child growing inside her. She is determined to find the rest of her family and keep her baby safe, no matter the cost. But as the horrors of her past start to resurface, she realizes that leaving her old life behind won't be easy. Outside the walls of The Ark, the real evil has only just begun. A brilliantly plotted, page-turning novel from "one of psychological suspense's best writers" (The Boston Globe), The Poison Garden will leave you stunned.

The book is about life in a cult preparing its members for the apocalypse and what happens when those who grew up in the cult are confronted with the outside world - what started out as a group of people training for survival turns into manipulation, power struggles, rape and murder. I liked the different perspectives and timelines, especially Romy‘s viewpoint. Interesting premise, dark and sad but also thought-provoking.Marwood is a good writer.

Story of an apocalyptic cult and the survivor. Narrative style shows the talent of the author, but sometimes I found the switching timeline/POV elements hard to follow. I didn‘t find this suspenseful or thrilling, more interesting and dark. It‘s slow paced and the ending was a bit less than desired but I would suggest it as a #dark, #emotional, and sad read for fans of reads ft psychology, cults, abnormal settings/plots etc 3/5 #thriller #suspense

I did enjoy this, but I think it gets a so-so as the ending didn‘t finish everything off but gave the impression that karma would come around as it were. I like my books to get everything tied up. But I do like Alex Marwood‘s books and the story of this as a cult which falls apart and how a few of the survivors dealt with it was very clever and creepy.

This was an arc I got from a friend‘s bookstore. I have no idea if it is out yet.

This was an excellent thriller with cults, poison, and betrayal. We are the Dead and they are the Arc. The world shall end and they will be ready.

This is Grace and me enjoying the weather outside. My current view of the garage. I love my old house and garage. The house is to my left. You can just see a corner of it. I am currently reading the tagged book. I am home for at least three weeks and I intend to enjoy the time off! #keeplitsypositive

TheAromaofBooks How fun!! That's the kind of apartment I was always on the lookout for when I was a renter. I never lived in an actual apartment building - they seem so depressing. I lived upstairs to a few different small offices & that kind of thing instead. Much more character!! 4y

Y'all I could not put this book down. I literally stayed up until five this morning because I *had* to finish it.

While investigating a mysterious odor the police discover more than a hundred dead bodies, the former members of an apocalypse cult that no one knew existed until it no longer did. This book follows the lives of three survivors, siblings Romy, Eden and Ilo and their lives both inside the cult and after.

I have a morbid fascination with cults, so I was thrilled when I won a copy of this ARC in #goodreadsgiveaways. It started a little choppy but once I got going it was very good. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
