The government sends Brian back to the Canadian wilderness in this beloved follow-up to the award-winning classic Hatchet from three-time Newbery Honor-winning author Gary Paulsen! Two years after Brian Robeson survived fifty-four days alone in the Canadian wilderness, the government wants him to head back so they can learn what he did to stay alive. This time Derek Holtzer, a government psychologist, will accompany him. But a freak storm leaves Derek unconscious. Brian's only hope is to transport Derek a hundred miles down the river to a trading post. He's survived with only a hatchet before--now can Brian build a raft and navigate an unknown river? For the first time it's not only Brian's survival that's at stake. . . An IRA-CBC Children's Choice A Parents Magazine Best Book of the Year "Vividly written, a book that will, as intended, please the readers who hoped that Paulsen, like Brian, would 'do it again.'" --Kirkus Reviews Read all the Hatchet Adventures! “He realized that he was not always right, was, indeed, often not right, and at the same time he found that others were not always wrong.”

Gary Paulsen can write wilderness survival stories that put you right into the action. Part of The Hatchet series, the MC must find a way to transport his unconscious friend 100 miles down the river to get help. No phone, no food- just a hatchet

Ahhhhhh. This was the one I was remembering scenes of. I thought this was Hatchet, but turns out I was mixing up Hatchet with its sequel. Found it on Libby. Off to start this one.. then I might nap a bit. ☺️😴

LeslieO Love this series! Have you read the rest of the books. Gary Paulson got so many letters from kids asking what would have happened if Brian wasn't rescued at the end of Hatchet that the wrote a book Brian's Winter after he wrote the River 6y
Clwojick @LeslieO I haven‘t read Brian‘s winter yet. Do you recommend??? 6y
LeslieO Yes! 6y
