“She had planned to spend a nice, lazy holiday with the new book her father had given her at Christmas and a box of candy.”

Those sound like FANTASTIC plans for New Year‘s Day, and I feel that “regretful peep” at her book!! But I love the plan to brighten someone‘s New Year, anonymously—with such a wonderful result. ⤵️

lauraisntwilder We're with my family for Christmas and intend to go back home in time for me to do exactly this on New Year's Day! 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement That was my favorite quote from this happy story too. 1mo

TheAromaofBooks This one was just adorable. And no good deed is done without a twinge of the selfish one that could have been 😂 1mo
BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder The perfect New Year's Day plan! I mean, unless you have an estranged uncle to cook for, in which case, do that. 😂 @CogsOfEncouragement It was such a relatable situation! @TheAromaofBooks So true!! 1mo
lauraisntwilder @BarbaraJean No estranged uncles! 😜 1mo

“I'll tell you what I'm going to do when I'm sixteen, Theodora. I'm going to pay off the mortgage, and buy mother a silk dress, and a piano for the twins. Won't that be elegant? I'll be able to do that 'cause I'm a man. Of course if I was only a girl I couldn't.“

🙄 I definitely rolled my eyes at this. And then the story went on to show just how much a 16-year-old girl can do!! #KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

BarbaraJean Today's story, “Christmas at Red Butte,“ can be found on Hoopla or online in this collection: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/24878

Tomorrow's story is “The End of the Young Family Feud,“ which can be found on Hoopla or online in this collection: https://www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20150145. Or, both stories are in the tagged collection.

CogsOfEncouragement Sixteen was much older than it is today to be sure. I enjoyed the happy twist in this one. Very merry. 2mo
JenlovesJT47 I rolled my eyes too lol but I enjoyed the story. An even better twist on The Gift of the Magi! 2mo

TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed this one!! I love a happy ending where everyone ends up rich 😂 2mo
lauraisntwilder This one was so sweet! 2mo
AvidReader25 This was my favorite so far. I just love that. her sacrifice led to something so beautiful. Imagine giving up one of the only things that matters to you just to bring joy to kids on Christmas morning. 💙 2mo
BarbaraJean @CogsOfEncouragment 16 was much older and $4 went a lot farther than it does today!! @TheAromaofBooks Hahaha... all the gold certainly didn't hurt! Maybe they can pay off the mortgage and buy the silk dress and piano sooner rather than waiting till Jimmy is 16. 😆 @AvidReader25 Yes! and then it comes full circle by the end, like Jen mentioned--it's a Gift of the Magi type ending! I kind of wanted her brother to go buy the locket back, though 😂 2mo
julieclair @BarbaraJean I had the same thought about the locket! After being so selfless, it would be wonderful if she could get it back. I was kind of surprised it didn't happen in the story. 1mo
