Christmas with Anne: And Other Holiday Stories
Christmas with Anne: And Other Holiday Stories | Lucy Maud Montgomery
70 posts | 23 read | 3 reading | 7 to read
Share Anne' s delight at receiving the dress of her dreams, the joy of a young woman reunited with her long lost brother on Christmas Eve, and the surprise of a trio of sisters who inadvertently end a family feud by arriving at the wrong uncle' s house for Christmas dinner. Featuring some well-loved characters from the Anne of Green Gables books, as well as plenty of new characters, this collection of short stories by L. M. Montgomery celebrates the joys and tribulations of Christmas and the hope of the new year. The perfect escape during the hectic holiday season and all year round.

Well, this starts off with a lengthy intro about how great Christmas is (that I‘m pretty sure was not written by LMM)—and if you want to skip ahead, you can start chapter one around the 7:45 mark! Not a whole lot of story yet in the first two chapters, but I‘m interested to hear the result of the snow fight tomorrow. #KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead ⤵️

BarbaraJean In all my Google searchings, I‘ve only found this as an audiobook on Hoopla. The intro seems to indicate it‘s drawn from several stories and books, but its origins are otherwise a mystery! I‘m interested to see how much of a traditional LMM flavor it has as we listen to the rest. (edited) 2d
lauraisntwilder Is it just me, or is the narrator pronouncing Todd like toad? 2d
BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder It‘s not just you! That annoyed me!! 2d
TheAromaofBooks I'm not an audiobook person, so I doubt I'll end up listening to this. But I'm very interested to hear what you think of it!! I wonder where this story came from?? I could find nothing about it! 2d

Here‘s the schedule for week three of our #KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead!

A Merryvale Christmas is available as an audiobook on Hoopla, and the Dec. 18-20 stories are in the tagged collection and online (I‘ll post links in the comments). See my previous post for a little caveat about Merryvale Christmas, which we‘ll be reading over a few days (~15 audiobook minutes per day). Looking forward to another week of cozy stories!

BarbaraJean I've only found A Merryvale Christmas as a Hoopla audiobook. The other stories are all in “Christmas with Anne“ or on Hoopla, and links are below:

Today‘s story for #KindredSpiritsChristmas is another good one. An absentminded teacher accidentally invites the wrong family to his landlady‘s house for Christmas dinner, but it‘s a happy mistake. Another reminder of what‘s really important this time of year. 4⭐️ 80 points

I haven‘t kept up with the L.M. Montgomery stories this past week, but I listened to several today on a walk with Luthien and read a couple more once back at the house. I‘ve loved the new ones that I haven‘t read before just as much as those I have. Reading these is such a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit! I especially loved “Aunt Cyrilla‘s Christmas Basket” and “The Osbornes‘ Christmas.”

Got a little behind on posting. I read the tagged book a few years ago so I‘m familiar with most of these stories but I‘m enjoying this reread for #KindredSpiritsChristmas - this is another really good one. I so prefer LMM over others like Louisa May Alcott (although I do like her) because of the humor she injects into all of her stories. 4.5⭐️

BarbaraJean This list is pulled together from several sources (I found a few more Christmas stories since last time!), so unfortunately not all the stories are available in one collection. Here are some options for where to find them. Use whatever works for you!

The tagged collection (ed. by Rea Wilmshurst) has 16 stories, and there are several LMM Christmas story collections and individual stories available on Hoopla (both audio & ebook). (More below ⬇)

BarbaraJean Serial Reader has an LMM Christmas Stories collection with 13 stories. Online options are another good source: Project Gutenberg, fadedpage.com, online-literature.com, fullreads.com, etc. I‘ve also added in a Christmas novella by LMM that I came across this year while poking around on Hoopla: “A Merryvale Christmas.” The Hoopla audiobook is the only place I‘ve found it! I finished reading these stories for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead.
#KindredSpiritsChristmas @BarbaraJean

They were very enjoyable. The themes were somewhat repetitive, but who doesn't like stories about families reconciling and people helping the less fortunate at this time of the year?

#WinterReadathon @Andrew65 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES
#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

kwmg40 Here in Ontario, we're being hit hard with a winter storm. My own family members are all safe and cozy and only suffered a few hours' power outage. However, I felt for the train passengers who were stranded on a train with no food or water for 18 hours. I wished there had been an Aunt Cyrilla with a big Christmas basket to give them some joy! 2y

BarbaraJean Thanks for joining in the buddy read! I feel for those train passengers, too—what a parallel to Aunt Cyrilla! And stranded passengers strikes a chord for me this year. I‘m in Southern California, so no winter snow for us, but my dad flew to Indiana with my niece & her husband to spend Christmas with my sister‘s family, and they got stuck at the Cincinnati airport overnight because the roads were closed between there and my sister‘s house. 🥶 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 2y
kwmg40 @DieAReader @Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks Thanks for the encouragement! Things are much better now, weather-wise. I hope that's also the case for those in other stricken areas.
2y
kwmg40 @BarbaraJean Sorry to hear that your family was also affected from the storm. The son of a good friend of mine missed coming home for Christmas because the trains were cancelled, but at least he didn't get caught on one of the ones that were stuck for almost a full day. 2y

Finishing this collection with another sweet story of goodwill and giving at Christmas. These LMM Christmas stories had lots of repeated themes, and some were a bit heavy-handed, but overall: they‘re lovely, cozy, and filled with kindness. Surely it can‘t be the same Josie Pye!

#KindredSpiritsChristmas - “Ida‘s New Year Cake” - 12/17/22

I have to say, a fruitcake would not be such an attraction for me as to invite a whole boardinghouse over to make merry, but this story did make it sound enticing. And again, such a sweet gesture of kindness at the holidays… with a reminder to keep that kindness throughout the year. 💜

I like Prissy Baker‘s New Year‘s plans! I love that she looks regretfully back at her book as she leaves the house… I felt that moment. 😁 And here we have another reconciliation story!
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

TheAromaofBooks I really liked this one, Prissy's willingness to give up a quiet, relaxing day (seriously a sacrifice) to go do something nice for someone who hasn't been kind to her. LMM talks a lot about people being to stubborn to admit they're in the wrong! 2y

#KindredSpiritsChristmas - 12/14/22 - “A Christmas Inspiration”

LMM‘s Christmas stories seem to primarily focus on either a reconciliation between estranged friends/family, or on giving to the needy, forgotten, or left out. And I am here. for. it. Love, love, loved today‘s story. I feel like I got to know each of the characters more in this one than in the other stories so far. Such a sweet tale of giving at Christmas. ❤️ #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

julieclair I absolutely loved this story! The true meaning of Christmas. And I really liked how they decided to keep up the "niceness" throughout the year, thus keeping the Christmas spirit alive! 2y
TheAromaofBooks This story had me all choked up! It was definitely one where the “lesson“ flowed seamlessly through the story so you didn't feel like you were getting preached to, but still felt inspired by it. 2y

#KindredSpiritsChristmas - “The Falsoms‘ Christmas Dinner” - 12/13/22

As soon as the rich uncle said he was coming for Christmas dinner, I knew it would be all right, in spite of any mishaps along the way. 😆 Another sweet story of needs provided & quarrels reconciled. I‘m struck by how often LMM‘s characters say things they regret, but are too proud to admit they were wrong. A nice little moral of the story here! #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Daisey I‘ve been really enjoying these stories of Christmas reconciliation! A little humor and so much heart. 💕 2y

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks You are always one step ahead of me! I have ideas for next year, but haven‘t posted anything yet because I need to do it from my computer, where I have my book list & tag list saved! I‘m thinking about alternating months with nonfiction (biographies, LMM‘s autobiog, books about her work) and LMM-adjacent fiction (Budge Wilson‘s prequel, Diana of Orchard Slope, etc.). I need to put a poll out there and see who‘s interested in what! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I honestly just couldn't remember if you had already posted a schedule or not 😂 I always start thinking about my next month's reading around the middle of the month so I can get books from the library, so that's what got me going!! I also couldn't remember if we have any LMM books but not-short-story-collections left to read! 2y
TheAromaofBooks But all that to say... no rush haha I was mostly making sure I hadn't forgotten it, not trying to pressure you to hurry 😆 2y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I‘ve been thinking about it but haven‘t DONE anything, so the prompt is good!! January is SO close 😬 I‘m pretty sure we‘ve exhausted all the books that aren‘t short story collections (and I‘m not super interested in those anyway). #KindredSpiritsChristmas - 12/12/22 - “The Christmas Surprise at Enderly Road”

#KindredSpiritsChristmas - 12/11/22 - “A Christmas Mistake”

We‘re back to usual cozy LMM fare with today‘s story. As soon as I got to the description of the rift between Mrs. Grant and Cornelia Millar, I thought “Oh, yay—it‘s going to be a mistake-leads-to-reconciliation story!” Yes, these are predictable, but still sweet. And I loved the absent-minded schoolteacher… reminded me of Anne! #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

This evening I read “The Red Room” and agree it‘s an interesting addition to a Christmas collection with the holiday having little impact on the story. The final climactic scene is later. That said, I did find this dark story fascinating as it‘s quite different from many of LMM‘s stories.

BarbaraJean I have that same copy of Windy Poplars. 😊 I do love Katherine's transformation, especially the way the Green Gables folk give her a sense of belonging for the first time!

It's so interesting to me that LMM chose to set “The Red Room“ around a Christmas visit. This is another story that feels like it was written kind of to order, for a specific audience/magazine, rather than in her usual style.

Daisey @BarbaraJean I agree, it seems to me the setting of Christmas was either to fit a request or just an excuse to bring the whole family together. Even the description of the celebration seems generic rather than holiday like. Yet, I did enjoy this as a complete change from her normal writing, as sometimes her short stories get a bit repetitive for me. 2y

#KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - 12/9/22

I love this section of Windy Poplars, and loved reading it by itself as a Christmas story. The descriptions of Green Gables and the Avonlea landscape in winter, seeing Katherine open up as she‘s welcomed by the Green Gables folk… I feel like it‘s a lovely Christmas story in its own right. Had you read it as part of Windy Poplars? Did it work for you outside the context of the novel? ⤵️

BarbaraJean Heads up for tomorrow: we diverge from the Christmas with Anne collection with the addition of “The Red Room” to our list. I was going to take it out, because it decidedly does NOT feel like a Christmas story—but it's included in a couple lists of LMM Christmas stories, and it does take place as part of a Christmas visit, so—here we go.😆 It's available here (probably elsewhere, too): http://www.online-literature.com/lucy_montgomery/1896-1901/14/ (edited) 2y
TheAromaofBooks It was kind of fun to read this one by itself. I think you lose some of just how grumpy and unwelcoming Katherine was at first, but it has always been one of my favorite turning points for a character. How horrid to spend your entire life feeling that everyone viewed you as an inconvenient burden to be shouldered! And I'm SO glad that she got a puppy!!! 2y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I think Katherine's transformation loses a little something when you don't read how awful she was early on. You get a little of it when Anne invites her, but you also see the desperation and her bitterness makes more sense. But I do so love her character and the way she just blossoms when she lets herself open up. And that Anne gets her a puppy (and that EVERYONE else gets her little presents) is just delightful! 🐶🎄 (edited) 2y

#KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - 12/8/22 - “Clorinda's Gifts“

I‘ve never liked Christmas lists. They always feel like grocery lists to me—and I used to think that a gift just bought off a list was less meaningful. If someone was buying me a gift, they should know me well enough to choose something I‘d like! Then I‘d be (perhaps unfairly) disappointed to receive a gift that showed the person didn‘t know me very well. ⤵️

BarbaraJean As I‘ve gotten older, I‘ve realized that lists can help people get to know you better, to better understand the kinds of things you enjoy. But I still don‘t really like Christmas lists. Today‘s story reminded me of why—“something of you—the best of you” doesn‘t necessarily go into a gift off a list. A gift from a list can do that, but a list can also make it easy to leave that part out. So I ended up loving this story more than I thought I would! 2y

“The Unforgotten One” wasn‘t one of my favorites, but I could appreciate the bittersweet sentiment of missing a loved one at Christmas.

“Clorinda‘s Gifts” was back to the theme of self-sacrificing. This one won‘t be a favorite either, but it was a good reminder to think of what we can do for others rather than just spending money on material gifts.

Today‘s #KindredSpiritsChristmas story was a bit too sentimental for me. I love the way LMM can sketch a character with just a few lines of dialogue or description, but these characters felt more generic. And I missed the usual touch of humor. But I‘ve had a bit of a Jonah day, so maybe it‘s just me! What did you think: too sentimental/saccharine? Or was it sweet and heartfelt for you? (Also: Ingleside with no Blythes?!) #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

sblbooks You're not alone, this was my least favorite. Too depressing. Also, I think my chapters may be out of order. There must be several anthologies, and maybe they're not exactly the same. 2y
Daisey I agree that I was a bit confused to be reading about and Ingleside with different characters. I didn‘t connect well with the vague characters, but I did appreciate the bittersweet aspect of missing someone so much at Christmas time. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I think the Ingleside thing must have been an example of LMM playing with names/concepts that she used later in her full novels, but it did give me a bit of a jolt! This one did feel a little sappy, but I think the message that we can't always tell what someone is feeling/going through by how they act/what they say did come through. 2y

AnnR I'm glad others didn't find The Unforgotten to be a favorite. The story seemed forced and dreary. The reader doesn't really get to know much about the characters at all, except they all come round by the end of the story. Short story writing must be difficult though, with so little time to tick off a lot of boxes as far as plot development and characterization. 2y
julieclair I agree, this was not my favorite. I look to LMM for comfort and a bit of humor, but this one just made me feel sad. Interestingly, I think the best-developed character was Avis, because we got to hear the things everyone said about why they missed her. I think she was someone I would have enjoyed knowing. 2y
BarbaraJean @sblbooks Argh, I‘m sure you‘re right that different collections have the stories in a different order. I used the order from Christmas with Anne, since that seemed to be the most common one. But there are a couple that weren‘t in that collection, so those will come up as we go on! I‘ll start putting the name of each story and the day on my posts so it‘s clearer which story we‘re on! (edited) 2y
BarbaraJean @Daisey @TheAromaofBooks I looked up when this story was published—apparently the Christmas stories were published between 1898 & 1910, which would place this one before either House of Dreams or Anne of Ingleside. So your thought is correct, Sarah! Still so strange to read a name that has all the Anne connections! I relate to the bittersweet missing someone at the holidays, and the message at the end, but it all seemed too heavy-handed! 2y
BarbaraJean @Ann_Reads I agree—it felt forced. With LMM‘s short stories, I often wonder if they are less “her” and more commercial—written to cater to a magazine audience that wants, for example, a sentimental tear-jerker Christmas story! @julieclair I definitely got a clearer picture of Avis than the others. I wouldn‘t have minded that with a different setting, though—if the family had shared their memories with each other instead of alone at her grave. 2y
TheAromaofBooks The introduction in my copy of this collection says that most of these were published in magazines and that not-infrequently LMM was requested to include a specific “lesson“ or moral, so I do think that some of these stories were more “pay the bills“ type than they were something genuinely written from the heart lol @sblbooks @Daisey @Ann_Reads @julieclair 2y

“How much Christmas do you suppose those little Rolands down there in the hollow have? Or Sammy Abbott with his lame back? Or French Joe‘s family over the hill? If you have too much Christmas, why don‘t you give some to them?”

I just loved today‘s story—the best Christmas comes from giving it away. ❤️🎄❤️#KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

TheAromaofBooks I really liked this story as well. It reminded me of The Birds' Christmas Carol except nobody had to die at the end 😂 2y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks 😂😂 LMM seems to avoid the “invalid child dies at the end” theme in her Christmas stories, doesn‘t she? We‘ll see—🤞🏼 2y

I love today‘s story for #KindredSpiritsChristmas, and the way Aunt Cyrilla was able to bring a group of strangers together for a lovely improvised celebration, making the most of what they had. BUT, let‘s just take a moment to ponder the list of items in Aunt Cyrilla‘s Christmas basket. Never mind how big the basket was that she was able to fit it all in. HOW DID SHE CARRY IT?!? #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

slategreyskies I‘m picturing it like Mary Poppins‘ bag where it‘s bigger on the inside than on the outside. Most of that list sounds nice, but I could do without the cold tongue. 🤢 2y
sblbooks I'm not sure how she carried it, but I really like the story. Christmas on a train is one of my favorite themes. 2y
TheAromaofBooks It was when she added the entire chicken that I lost it 😂 2y

AnneCecilie I enjoyed this story too. I think it must have been magical, like Hermione‘s bag in the last HP book. 2y
quietjenn Well, they are good at packing. 😄 But dang, it must have been heavy! 2y
BarbaraJean @slategreyskies @AnneCecilie It definitely seemed like there had to be magic involved for all of that list to fit inside! @sblbooks It was a perfect story for you! I loved how all these strangers came together to support each other and how each one left having helped someone else or being given just what they needed. 2y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I loved how she matter-of-factly said she‘d have to leave the pig, but could make room for the chicken. 😂 @quietjenn I kept trying to imagine how many bags of groceries all of that would translate into, and if I‘d be able to carry that many bags in from my car in one trip. 😆 2y

I have an artificial tree, but I love the scent of cedar, so this afternoon I took a walk & cut branches for my kitchen before reading today‘s story. These daily stories are perfect for the weeks leading up to Christmas. I enjoyed both “The End of the Young Family Feud” yesterday & “Aunt Cyrilla‘s Christmas Basket” today. They‘re such sweet stories with uplifting messages.

We put the tree up today, and this was my view for my #KindredSpiritsChristmas reading tonight! Today‘s story was another sweet one, with mistakes turned to good in the end. LMM seems to use the theme of reconciliation frequently, and it‘s a theme I usually enjoy—I like how it plays out here. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

I read “Christmas at Red Butte” on my phone with a sleeping Luthien curled up beside me. I loved this one, and it reminded me of Louisa May Alcott‘s Christmas stories with the struggling family full of hope, a sacrifice to make sure Christmas happens for the children, and a happy ending.

I might say this about (almost) all of these Christmas stories, but: what a sweet story! The struggling family, the hopeful children, the sacrifices made to ensure a happy Christmas, and the Christmas Day happy ending. ❤️🎄I loved the children‘s confidence that Santa would come because they wrote him a letter and “threw it up the chimney.” No doubt the best method to communicate with Santa! 😂

AnnR I'm just catching up on the stories after making a last minute decision to join in. I really liked the family atmosphere but felt badly about Theodora needing to sell an heirloom that meant so much to her. Given the ending, I hope she can buy it back. 🙂 2y
AnneCecilie This story had me thinking about when I was a kid and how much I was looking forward to the presents. Only goes to show that kids doesn‘t really change that much no matter what time they are born into. 2y
BarbaraJean @Prairiegirl_reading I know, right? A whole Christmas for $4! @Ann_Reads Glad to have you joining in! I had the same thought about the ending. 😊 @AnneCecilie I think that aspect of Christmas may be universal for kids, regardless of time or place! 2y

#KindredSpiritsChristmas day 2 takes us back to Green Gables! I just love Matthew. His determination to get Anne a pretty dress, in spite of his shyness, is just the sweetest. I loved seeing the romantic gesture from Gilbert at the concert, and Anne‘s “lofty” comment: “I simply never waste a thought on him, Diana.” 😂 Then Marilla‘s reluctantly expressed but heartfelt affection for Anne. 💜 Such beloved characters! #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

TheAromaofBooks Matthew shopping for the dress is one of my favorite scenes in the movie as well. The perky, helpful clerk is done so well, and I lose it every time he asks for the garden rake 😂 2y
Prairiegirl_reading This was such a sweet story but oh how I cringed when I realized the Cuthberts vote Conservative! Lol! Of course they would have but it caught me of guard for a second. 😂 2y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks 😂 My favorite detail on this reading was the clerk‘s bangles, which are just the final straw for poor Matthew. @Prairiegirl_reading Ha! I have a feeling they were quite a different breed of Conservative than the cringe-worthy ones of today!! 2y

I‘m not really feeling the Christmas spirit yet this year, but I started my day by listening to “Matthew Insists on Puffed Sleeves” while getting ready and uplifting Christmas music on my way to school. I definitely think these daily stories will help. For this buddy read, I‘m going to do a combination of audio (on Hoopla) and print.
