Pretty as a Picture: A Novel | Elizabeth Little

An egomaniacal movie director, an isolated island, and a decades-old murder--the addictive new novel from the bestselling author of Dear Daughter Marissa Dahl, a shy but successful film editor, travels to a small island off the coast of Delaware to work with the legendary--and legendarily demanding--director Tony Rees on a feature film with a familiar logline. Some girl dies. It's not much to go on, but the specifics don't concern Marissa. Whatever the script is, her job is the same. She'll spend her days in the editing room, doing what she does best: turning pictures into stories. But she soon discovers that on this set, nothing is as it's supposed to be--or as it seems. There are rumors of accidents and indiscretions, of burgeoning scandals and perilous schemes. Half the crew has been fired. The other half wants to quit. Even the actors have figured out something is wrong. And no one seems to know what happened to the editor she was hired to replace. Then she meets the intrepid and incorrigible teenage girls who are determined to solve the real-life murder that is the movie's central subject, and before long, Marissa is drawn into the investigation herself. The only problem is, the killer may still be on the loose. And he might not be finished. A wickedly funny exploration of our cultural addiction to tales of murder and mayhem and a thrilling, behind-the-scenes whodunit, Pretty as a Picture is a captivating page-turner from one of the most distinctive voices in crime fiction.

I absolutely adored everything about this novel & now I desperately want a sequel. It doesn't even have to be a mystery, just Marissa & Amy making their movie & Isaiah & Marissa carefully finding ways to bridge the neurodivergent divide to gently flirt with each other.

It's funny, it's touching, it's biting, & it is on-the-nose about the movies & #metoo in a way that seems like it would be too obvious, but is actually, exactly, perfect.

In this entertaining mystery, a film editor arrives on set to discover that the movie she's been hired to work on is plagued with mysterious firings and accidents. Anxious, socially awkward and probably neurodivergent, Marissa gets caught up in an effort to solve the decades old murder at the heart of the movie. Vivid, engaging characters and Marissa's delightfully self-aware point of view made this a fast, fun read, especially for film buffs.

I had to push myself through the first half of this book. The main character Marissa was incredibly difficult to connect with, but by the end I was rooting for her. It was an okay read, 3.5⭐️ in my book.

I don‘t think I‘ve read a book, that I can remember, with a lead who is definitely openly on the spectrum. It was fun, and I enjoyed all the movie shoutouts even if they are completely Hollywood mainstream.

Marissa is a film editor who gets sucked into a real life mystery on her latest job. The film is based on the unsolved murder of a girl that happened 20 years prior. When Marissa arrives to work, she soon learns that something is wrong on set, and everyone is on edge.

This book is…fine. I don‘t have any specific complaints but I was never invested in any part of it. There‘s a fine line between a “slow burn” and just “slow”and this was the latter.

A very fun murder mystery that will keep your attention. Not much happens throughout the 300ish pages, but I was invested nonetheless. I always feel an author has a gift when I keep devouring a novel when not much goes on. Really recommend this one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I don‘t really know what to say about this book. I didn‘t like it, but I didn‘t hate it. It wasn‘t a poorly written book at all, but it dealt with a subject matter that didn‘t really interest me. I was totally lost in parts that delved too deeply into film editing “lingo”. Murder mystery isn‘t. normally my thing, so that also had an impact on my opinion. Thank you, Goodreads, on the ARC.

Marissa is a film editor (on the autism spectrum) who gets hired by a movie company isolated on an island that is being plagued by accidents. (A locked island mystery-ha) She cannot read faces or mannerisms so she relates to people/situations by thinking of movies, scenes, or actors that she is reminded of. When she's in the dark scrambling for help, she thinks: even Jimmy Stewart had flashbulbs. Movie buffs: enjoy. 🎥❤️😊

I‘ve gotten some exciting book mail over the last few days, which includes this finished copy of Elizabeth Little‘s upcoming thriller Pretty as a Picture. I‘m looking forward to reading about “an egomaniacal director, an isolated island, and a decades old murder!” (Quoted from dust jacket flap).
