What if you knew exactly when youd die? The first book of The Chemical Garden Trilogy.By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males born with a lifespan of 25 years, and females a lifespan of 20 years--leaving the world in a state of panic. Geneticists seek a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children. When Rhine is sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Yet her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine cant bring herself to hate him as much as shed like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husbands strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement; her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next; and Rhine has no way to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Together with one of Linden's servants, Gabriel, Rhine attempts to escape just before her seventeenth birthday. But in a world that continues to spiral into anarchy, is there any hope for freedom?

This was such an original book, I loved the dystopian feel to it, but some of the themes of this book are questionable, such an underage pregnancy from one of the side characters and polygamy. However the themes worked well to the book in a dark and twisted way. I love the plot and the pacing, the forbidden romance was sweet but I felt like something was missing between the two. I liked the MC but I found it hard to relate to her at times.

I actually really liked this series. I thought the plot of the story to be unique when it came out.

I loved “The Glass Spare” and when I saw this dystopian series of Lauren DeStefano‘s, how could I resist? The law of unintended consequences is at play in this book as past genetic breakthroughs caused the next generations to die young – males at 25 and females at 20. Reminded me a bit of the Netflix series “Between”. Except there are older people (those that benefited) and geneticists work for a cure while girls must keep the human race going.

Happy First Day of Autumn!! This is my absolute favorite season and I am so happy that summer is over. This quote is one I always love going to around this time of year. Halloween, pumpkin spice macchiatos, hot cocoa, my birthday, and the changing of the leaves are just a few of my favorite parts of Autumn. What is your favorite season? 🍁🎃🍂☕️

I actually almost bailed on this book. I had problems with the world-building, and how the characters handled certain problems. But somehow I also really wanted to know if the protagonist would succeed in her goal by the end of this book or if it would carry to the next volume. And I really liked how the author focuses on the sisterhood of female friendships. I doubt I'll pick up the rest, but happier I stuck it out than expected. Cool cover too.

Interesting premise. Girls die at 20 and men die at 25 but there are no other diseases.

#AprilBookChallenge2k17 :Best Cover Art

Couple days late with this post (oops), but I absolutely love the covers of these books. Each of the circles points out a clue about the plot of the book. I thought it was really clever!

DeStefano's debut novel is and, will always be one of my all time favourite YA novels. It is a wonderful story set in the near future with an incredible setting. As the main character, Rhine, grows more and more secrets are discovered. The beautifully written story will leave you on the edge of your seat until the very end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/5 #readjanuary

Finally!! A trilogy that is worthy of three books! Loved the main character. Realistic and strong. I would read more of this author. Well written.
