This series just keeps getting better each volume. The series features a pair of brothers who attempt alchemy to bring their mother back to life and almost kill themselves. Though it may appear to be a YA series, it is actually quite dark and violent at times and most certainly packs an emotional punch. 5⭐️
#bookspinbingo - bingo!

#Steampunk. Flying ships. Superweapons. Magic. Powerful goddesses. God-possessed girls. New Orleans.

This is one cool #standalone #alternativehistory #novella 😁

(If only the characters were a match for the worldbuilding...)

Don‘t get me wrong. The characters are fine, just noticeably overshadowed, so the overall balance is a bit off.

Still a pick, though.

3.5/5

This continues to be one of the best and most imaginative graphic novel series that I've ever read. Kippa will always be my favorite character. 💚

We finally learn quite a bit about who Zinn is and things that happened in the past. It ends on a big cliffhanger and I was excited that I already had the next volume so I didn't have to wait.

As always, the artwork is stunning.

booklover3258 I agree Kippa is the best. I always say if they kill off Kippa I will no longer read Monstress. 1w
Addison_Reads @booklover3258 I agree. If Kippa goes, I go. 1w

What a wonderful book! If you like fantasy, read this one.❤️❤️❤️

KathyWheeler I haven‘t read this yet, but I bought it as soon as it came out. He is one of my favorite authors. 2w
WriterAtHeart @KathyWheeler - This is the first time I've read this author, but I definitely want to read some of his other stuff. 2w
KathyWheeler @WriterAtHeart The first one I ever read is Dead Djinn in Cairo which is set in the same world as this book. Ring Shout is really good too and features the Ku Klux Klan in an interesting way. 1w

I‘m so impressed with how full and real this world feels! You have a huge cast of fully developed characters with their own backstories, motivations, and secrets. In addition to the visuals you get background noise (extensive dialogue in made up languages written in invented characters, onomatopoetic sound effects…) The world is populated with faces you don‘t know, who are only around for a scene or maybe just a panel, but they‘re not landscape,⬇️

IndoorDame the NPCs have dialogue wherever it seems natural. Not every scene directly advances the plot. In book 5 lots of time is still devoted to world building and character development. At this point in a series I‘m often getting fatigued and loosing interest, but I can‘t wait to continue this one just to spend more time in this world. 2w
vivastory I picked up vol 7 today, cant wait to dive back in 2w

It‘s amazing how ingrained heteronormativity is in our culture! As a member of the queer community I‘ve really been enjoying the diversity in this series. And I never stopped to think twice about the fact that this is a world where gods, humans and animals can all interbreed, but this panel genuinely surprised me. So now I have to put the book down and take some time to think through what my surprise implies. #LGBTQ

This was a reread for me. I read it over a year ago and failed to read the next book. I am now ready to finish this series and since I had forgotten a lot of the story I felt a reread necessary. Loved the story and the characters. Sanderson sure knows how to write great characters and his world building is spot on. Excited to read the next book. Just waiting on my library hold. 5⭐️

IndoorDame I‘m constantly having to restart series when I pick up later books. My memory is like a sieve 😂 2w
Hedon I skipped the reread, took me a while to remember everything. The reread is the smart decision. 2w
TheSpineView @Hedon Glad I did the reread. I had forgotten so much. 2w

I wanted a light fiction break from Nonfiction November, and this did the trick.

It‘s YA, a coming of age story about a princess who goes undercover to have a summer as a normal person. It‘s a world where 18 year olds attend “coming-of-age” type balls and a computer can tell you who would be a good genetic match for you.

I probably wouldn‘t have finished if I weren‘t curious how the #LGBTQIA thread would play out. It‘s a light pick for me.

Soubhiville Would work for the #LoveTriangle prompt for #booked2023. 2w

Volume 4 takes us back into the mythology of this world, which is totally my favorite part of the series!

KristiAhlers I love that series 2w
Deifio I also love that series! Have to get into it again, I think I only read the first two volumes 🙈 2w
IndoorDame @Deifio I recommend it! I flipped through the first 2 at a friend‘s place years ago, and the art style was so captivating I couldn‘t get it out of my mind. So glad I‘ve finally returned to read the series properly. 2w
