Basque History Of The World
Basque History Of The World | Mark Kurlansky
7 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
"They are a mythical people, almost an imagined people," writes Mark Kurlansky. Settled in a corner of France and Spain in a land marked on no maps except their own, the Basques are a nation without a country, whose ancient and dramatic story illuminates Europe's own saga. Where did they come from? Signs of their civilization exist well before the arrival of the Romans in 218 B.C., and their culture appears to predate all others in Europe. Their mysterious and forbidden tongue, Euskera, is related to no other language on Earth. The Basques have stubbornly defended their unique culture against the Celts, the Romans, the Visigoths and Moors, the kings of Spain and France, Napoleon, Franco, the modern Spanish state, and the European Union. Yet as much as their origins are obscure, the Basques' contributions to world history have been clear and remarkable. Early explorers, they made fortunes whaling before the year 1000 and became the premier cod fishermen in Europe after discovering Canada's Grand Banks. Juan Sebastian de Elcano, a Basque, was the first man to circumnavigate the globe in 1522. Their influence has also been felt in religion as founders of the Jesuits in 1534, and in business, as leaders of the Industrial Revolution in southern Europe. Mark Kurlanky's passion for the Basque people, and his exuberant eye for detail, shine throughout this fascinating history. Like his acclaimed Cod, it blends human, economic, political, literary and culinary history into a rich and heroic tale. From the Hardcover edition.

#joinin Merry Christmas! 🎄 Behold What has probably been the nicest Christmas in our house since 2014. Clockwise: Bunny with her dinosaur bone. Overnight egg nog oatmeal. Cleo and the giant Christmas dog and blue hippo lovey. Bunny patiently waiting by the tree. Gingerbread cake for breakfast. Sharing the chair is a feature, not a bug. #dogsoflitsy

Thank you to everyone in #LitsyLove who has sent a holiday postcard my way. I know I‘m not the biggest keeper-upper, but it‘s meant a lot to get your good wishes. I‘m having a harder than usual time keeping things together this holiday season — a 3 yo, a 6 yo, a stressed husband — and my own anxiety showing me that it‘s getting more severe. I‘m on a new medication for PCOS symptoms that makes me nauseated, so I‘ve spent 2 of the last 10 days 👇🏻

mrsmarch 👉🏻 sick in bed. Today‘s the first day of winter school vacation, heaven help me. I can‘t even locate the book I‘m trying to read, because someone moved it & doesn‘t know where they put it. Whoever moved it doesn‘t even realize they did, because no one is admitting it. I feel like a terrible, unworthy Litten. Thank you all for bearing with me in this hard, hectic time. 4y
TheKidUpstairs Sending you lots of love and good wishes. Holidays can be extra hard, especially with the combination of young kids and anxiety. My favourite thing about Litsy is that it, and the Littens who are on here, are always there. Even if you go through periods of absence, no one judges or gets angry, everyone is just happy to see you when you're on. I hope you're able to find some restful joy over the holiday season. Sending you lots of Litsy Love! 4y

For the first time in THREE years I am awake before the whole house. Hopefully this is a new trend now that my youngest is turning 3. My dog Amy used to wake me up at 5:15 for her #breakfast, and we cherished the time. I‘d read and/or watch the news and it helped me feel human, not like a mom-bot. Today, #coffee in a REAL mug and flaky morning buns from a bakery in Brookline brought as a hostess gift from yesterday‘s dinner guests.

Cortg Enjoy! I‘m always the 1st one up and I cherish every second of my morning before the rest of the crew wakes up! 4y
Lcsmcat Enjoy! I‘m the first one up and am enjoying it greatly. 4y

Kids in my neighborhood trick or treating tonight

Cortg OMG! We‘re under a tornado warning but it didn‘t stop Dorothy from trick-or-treating at my house. She informed me she had Toto in her basket 😂 4y
mrsmarch @Cortg How appropriate! Somewhere out in the gloom are my children. I just watched two groups of kids visit the house in either side of me and walk right past my house, what the heck. 4y
Cortg I hope your kiddos are having fun! One of mine dressed as Forrest Gump and went to his girl friend‘s to hand out candy. The other took a nap in her Lydia (from Beetlejuice the musical, NOT the movie.) I miss them trick-or-treating! 4y

ValerieAndBooks @Cortg are you near Philly? we actually had a tornado touch down three miles from us late last night 😱 — although there was damage, it wasn‘t widespread fortunately. @mrsmarch our neighborhood doesn‘t get trick or treaters but I always buy a small bag of candy “just in case” 😂 4y
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks My in laws live in Montgomery Co PA — where was this tornado?! 🌪 4y
ValerieAndBooks Small world!! It was in Thornbury Twp, Delaware Co (I‘m in Thornbury Twp, Chester Co). 4y
Cortg @ValerieAndBooks I‘m in Maryland @ 2 hrs from Philly. We had tornado warnings and a nasty storm that start @ 10:30 but no tornado. A friend had a tree large limb go through her roof, but it was beautiful and warm for the trick-or-treaters in the early evening, just a bit windy. 4y

My colleague from the Basque region of Spain came to visit! I took her sightseeing and she brought me a tin of chocolates. How "sweet" of her! The lid of the tin shows a traditional Basque scene (I'm told).

I have an insane amount of chocolate in my house. Thank goodness Christmas is coming! ?

Jinjer I love tins like these! Everything should come in fancy tins! I‘ve never had chocolate from Spain! Did u like it? 6y
No_One @Jinjer I also love keepsake tins! I had 3 chocolates and they are very good! They‘re individually wrapped and the “legend” shows 7-8 different types. But to be honest, the ones I had tasted the same. 😐 Must be my unsophisticated taste buds. 🙂. They are all dark chocolates with flavoured chocolate-cream centres. Very rich and intense! Also my first experience with chocolates from Spain. Hopefully not my last! 😃 6y
